emm...
should we have a vote for
YAM rice from Penang Mainland versus Yam rice from Penang Island?

personally, I like the mainland version more...
even though i stayed longer in Penang island...
haha

Well... both have different version of dishes for sure and the ways they cook their yam rice were also different. The mainland one had the rice "gas cook" in a large pot with "soaked" dried shrimps and large chunks of raw yam. Thus, the rice and yam have softer bites. The island one uses large "gas rice cooker" but with a more "homely touch" where the soaked dried shrimps and cubed yam pieces were fried together with the rice grains and dark soy sauce, etc, prior to being cooked in the pot. Both has their own taste, uniqueness, fragrance and it would be hard to compare as both of them are equally delicious in their own style. :)

a lot of soup compare to dishes. I can't imagine just taking the plain yam rice without side dishes, sure can't swallow that one.

You would be surprised Steven... I can have the yam rice just like that. The softness was just right!

how come this yam rice and the others so much different leh?! no wonder the title of the post is A Different Yam Rice Version in Penang la!

Bingo! Not many people realized that there were many ways to take yam rice. This version has been in Penang island for the last 4-5 years or maybe more.
