T-JAY CAFÉ @ THE GARAGE

Posted by Criz Lai On September - 12 - 2008

TJAYCAFE01

SORRY! THIS RESTAURANT HAS CEASED ITS OPERATION EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 2008

T-Jay Café would be an ideal place for hangout since it’s located within The Garage, a place filled with endless flow of people going for a drink or some partying. You would see a lot of tourist enjoying themselves there too. What I like most is their flexibility of dining hours. I usually find it hard to dine out after 10.00pm (due to having to work up to after 9.00pm most of the time) as most of the restaurant would be closed by then. I recently paid them a visit after looking through all the menus of other restaurants and found their price list amongst one of the more affordable ones around that area. Moreover, much to my surprise, they do not charge any taxes.

Two of us went for dinner around 10.15pm. We were presented with a menu with so many dishes to choose from ranging from Western to Oriental. They have lamb, chicken, fish, beef and sausages in the Western food sections and local hawker delicacies such as Curry Chicken Rice, Kong Poh Chicken Rice, Fried Noodles and so on. We ended up ordering some of the recommended dishes. As for appetizer, we had soup of the day which was Mushroom Soup (RM4.90). The soup was creamy and had a bit of the herb taste. Very tasty compared to others that I had tasted before.

TJAYCAFE02

We were then served the Caribbean Cheese Baked Fish (RM19.90). Although the fish (Dory Fish) size was not as big as I had expected, it was baked with lots of Mozzarella, Cheddar and Parmesan Cheese. The dish tasted great with lots of salads and fries to fill up the tummy.

TJAYCAFE03

The Chicken Breast Supreme (RM12.90) came next. Two tender pieces of chicken fillet was served. Not big but the taste was great with the special sauce by the chef. The sauce tasted like BBQ sauce but had a milder taste with a combination of tomato and onion puree.

TJAYCAFE04

As for drinks, we order a Kickapoo Fizzy Soft Drink (RM3.90) and Oreo Chocolate Milkshake (RM8.90). In fact the Oreo drink was our own creation as there only offered Oreo Coffee Milkshake.

TJAYCAFE05

After resting out filled tummies while watching Astro’s Asia Food Channel, we decided to try out their recommended Choc Cake Ala Mode (RM6.90). The dessert came with a small piece of moist chocolate cake (a bit of Brandy taste in it) with a large scoop of Nestle’s vanilla ice cream topped with Hershey chocolate syrup and chocolate rice. It was real yummy.

TJAYCAFE06

Visiting this restaurant won’t be hard as it is within the compound of The Garage along Upper Penang Road. The only problem would be the parking as the place would be packed during weekends. The nearest place with ample car park would be the car park along Penang Road, opposite Cititel. Anyway, it’s good to take a stroll and watch for any happenings along this hot night spots area of Penang. On top of that, you can easily get access into the many bistros and pubs surrounding that area such as Fame, Slippery Senorita, Momo, Mois and so on after having your meal there.

A NIGHT WITH PENANG FLOGGERS AT HAI NAN TOWN RESTAURANT

Posted by Criz Lai On August - 3 - 2008

HAINANTOWN01

Yesterday marked an unforgettable day as I got to meet up with some of the food bloggers in Penang. Finally, I get to see those real faces behind the virtual food blogs. Those who attended the mini gathering included the three brains behind PenangTuaPui, Lingzie, CK Lam, Buzzing Bee, Carrie, Gill & hubby Jason and me. I wanted to arrive earlier to take some snap shots of the vicinity but ended up quite late at 7.45pm due to some unexpected delay. Why? Because my little gift packs only came out from the oven only at 7.20pm. LOL!

HAINANTOWN02

Anyway, the gathering started with us guessing who and who were Tam Jiak, Huat Koay and Fei Fei from the PenangTuaPui trio. We all were in stitches after knowing the story behind this trio. In fact the whole group of floggers who gathered there last night was a bunch of jokers. Not only do they know their taste buds well, they also know how to make everyone felt at home. Not long later, the food was served. Here were the dishes we had ordered.

The food served that night was just average and nothing to fuss about. What really got us excited was when BuzzingBee brought out her homemade fruit tarts. Everybody was like busy shooting those 20 pieces of tarts being nicely arranged on the lazy susan. The tarts were amazing. Bee had the tarts baked to perfection with some not-so-sweet chocolate glazed at the base. She then topped the tarts with freshly sliced banana, kiwi fruit, orange and lychee. What a nice dessert for all of us.

HAINANTOWN10

Finally, a beautiful and moist Green Tea Cake bought by Lingzie came in. Coincidentally it was Carrie’s Birthday. How old was she? We dare not ask. As you know most ladies would not like to disclose their age, especially when they get a year older on their birthday. LOL! Anyway, we had lots of fun fooling around with her cake as who should get the strawberries and so on. In the end, they ended up on Carrie’s plate. Here was what she had on her plate.

HAINANTOWN09

Somehow, something made my mind go wild when she made her birthday wish. Is this what she had in her mind? We won’t know for sure… hahaha!

HAINANTOWN08

Finding the restaurant won’t be hard as it is located within the vicinity of Penang’s Inshore Marina, Church Street Pier and QEII along Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay). It’s a great place for gathering and to have a drink while enjoying the scenic view of the seaside.

BREEZE CAFE

Posted by Criz Lai On July - 16 - 2008

BREEZECAFE01

Other than Northam Beach Café, there is another place called Breeze Café right up by the coastal area of Tanjung Tokong. The concept here is totally different compared to NBC as all the food and beverages are managed by only a restaurant there. They do serve Western food, noodles & rice dishes, finger food up to ice creams, coffee and hard liquors. Not a bad place to laze about on the easily available deck chairs while enjoying the cool breeze from the sea. This is quite an ideal place for love birds as well as for small groups of friends.

The management can even arrange for BBQ by the beach for a minimum of 4 persons (RM25+ each), a group of 25 persons (RM25+ each plus a free bungalow stay) and themed buffet dinner for a minimum of 20 persons (RM25+ each) by the beach. You can check out more information on the promotion through any of their other restaurants, Nyonya Café (i-Avenue) in Bayan Lepas, Penang or Nyonya Café (New World Park), Penang.

My friend and I paid a visit recently and found the place quite relaxing except that you might find some stray mosquitoes biting since the place is dimly lighted and with a lots of decorative plants around. Both of us ordered a Shirley Temple (RM8) and a Kickapoo (RM4) as our drinks.

As for starter, I ordered a bowl of Mushroom Soup (RM4.50). It came in a big soup bowl with a few largely cut crouton. Not bad for the pricing but the soup tasted ordinary.

BREEZECAFE02

As for the main, I ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu (RM10). The dish was presented in a simple way with the usual fries, salad, white plain bread (a quarter and non-toasted?) and the stuffed breaded chicken drumstick garnished with some mushroom sauce. Maybe it was my luck as the chicken was quite burn and dry and the stuffing has no taste of cheese at all. The mushroom sauce was rather bland too.

BREEZECAFE03

My friend ordered a Black Pepper Chicken (RM9). The garnishing was the same except that he got a larger piece of battered chicken drumstick with thigh. As for the black pepper sauce, I felt that it was rather diluted with not much of pepper taste in it. I still love the one at Yaw’s Roast & Grill.

BREEZECAFE04

My friend and I then ordered Love Boat (RM8) to share out as dessert. We were allowed to choose 3 flavors from the list of 6 flavors such as Vanilla, Coffee, Chocolate, Strawberry, Rum & Raisins and Mint Chocolate Chips. You can even order a scoop at RM3.50.

BREEZECAFE05

The total price came up to RM47.85 which included a 10% service charge. Overall, the place is not bad for drinkers. As for food, I would hope that the management would spice up the quality in order to gain more diners. I have not tried their other stir-fried dishes with rice or fried noodles yet. Maybe I might have other opinions of the taste and quality.

Most people, even the locals would miss this place as it is situated right inside the coastal area of Tanjung Tokong. If you are driving up from town area towards Tanjung Tokong / Tanjung Bungah / Batu Ferringhi, you will see the Penang Chinese Swimming Club on your right. Drive forward until you see a traffic light (Tanjung Bungah Hotel on your right). Make a U-Turn and drive towards the swimming club. Turn left into the road after the swimming club until you see Naza Hotel. The café is just next to the hotel. They do also provide budget motel here under the name Sea Wind Beach Motel. You can park right inside or just along the road. Parking spaces are rather limited within the compound.

SEGAFREDO UPPER PENANG ROAD

Posted by Criz Lai On June - 30 - 2008

SEGAFREDO01

Recently, a client of mine invited me for a dinner. We circled a few rounds within Georgetown to seek a place for dinner and ended up at Segafredo, Upper Penang Road. The ambience of the bistro & pub was great. There were the outside area and inside area with soft house music. This is quite a cool place for a small meeting as well as for casual chit chats.

We order our drinks Wildfruit Granita (RM13) and Iced Lemon Tea (RM7.50) followed by Cheesy Garlic Bread (RM5.50) while waiting for our main dishes to be served.

SEGAFREDO02

My client ordered the Chicken Arrosto (RM13.50) which looked very impressive in the menu. He ended up with a chicken drumstick which was too small a portion for his big size although the taste was not bad at all.

SEGAFREDO04

On the other hand, I ordered the Fish & Chips (RM14) which was also too small a portion for my appetite. There was nothing special at all in this dish except for the two big prawns served in the salad.

SEGAFREDO03

Overall, I would think the bistro is rather pricey in their food and beverages items. We paid RM61.53 for the meal, inclusive of 10% service charge and 5% Government Tax which came up to RM8.03. I guessed the bistro served more party goers than diners well here as it is situated within the night entertainment spots of Upper Penang Road. Just refer to the map below if you would like to pay a visit to this place.

EA BISTRO AND PUB

Posted by Criz Lai On June - 28 - 2008

EABISTRO01

You may have pass by this restaurant always but maybe you did not pay much attention as it is hidden at the end of a lane. This restaurant is actually right with the premises of the Penang Eurasian Association. That’s how it got its name as EA Bistro & Pub. Not only does the restaurant serve Set Lunch (RM9.90) daily (except Monday), it also served one of the best Western Food as well as Japanese Meals around the area and everything in this restaurant is freshly cooked daily. Even the soups are prepared with the freshest ingredients and the Japanese meals are prepared with imported Japanese products.

My friend and I discovered this place on our way to Tanjung Tokong area a few days back and decided to try out this place. We ordered the BBQ Chicken (RM16.90) and Blackened Chicken (RM16.90). The Blackened Chicken is actually grilled cajun spiced chicken breast meat served with black pepper sauce. Every piece on the plate is well prepared and tasty. The portion served is extremely large.

EABISTRO02

The BBQ Chicken on the other hand is a grilled cajun spiced chicken drumstick served with sweet fragrance-rich BBQ sauce. Absolute delicious too!

EABISTRO03

For every order of an Ala Carte Western Dishes, you are can upsized to Set Dinner with an additional RM7.00. You will get a glass of soda of your choice, a fresh Mushroom Soup, a spicy green salad, and coffee or tea. This is recommended for those big eaters. You should also try out the smoothness of their Vietnamese Coffee. This is such a great offer!

EABISTRO04

EABISTRO05

There will also be different Live Bands performing from Thursday until Saturday. Thursday would be Jazz Night, First and Third Friday would be Country Night, Second and Fourth Friday would be Retro Night and Saturday would be Oldies Night. This is not a bad place for group gatherings or party but you will expect dimly lighted place with some smoke since this is a bistro cum pub.

There is also a list of Teppanyaki and Sashimi dishes, Spaghetti and Pasta, and finger food available for your hungry tummy. The boss recommended their Yaki Udon, Yaki Mesi, Spaghetti Marinara and Chicken & Mushroom Fettuccine for our next visit.

EABISTRO07

If you are coming from town towards Gurney Plaza along Jalan Kelawai, you will reach a traffic light. Go straight and turn into the second lane on your left. The restaurant is just at the end of a no-through road, right in between the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Malaysia building and Arcadia Apartment. Hunzaland Project Office is just directly opposite the lane. The will be parking space inside.

JEMPUTREE

Posted by Criz Lai On February - 19 - 2008

JEMPUTREE

Finally, there is a place called Jemputree in Penang where we can sit around to have decent chats with soft music at the background and good ambience. The place has the feel of a rainforest blended in with small huts as if you are living in a tribal village. There is also a place to get that tree house experience. Moreover, you can have the privacy you ever wanted and a group of friendly “natives” to serve to all your dining needs.

JEMPUTREE AMBIENCE

Jemputree has a wide range of Malaysian’s mouth watering delights with variations that include Malay, Western & Oriental style of culinary choices. You can get meals from finger food to spicy dishes and pasta. There are also many local desserts and beverages that will make your stay worthwhile such as ais kacang, rojak, ginseng tongkat ali and rainbow. Below are some of the dishes I have ordered:

SOUP OF THE DAY

NASI LEMAK KAMPUNG

TOM YAM MAGGIE MEE
