FACES STEAK CORNER

FACES01

Who would expect Julia Roberts to accompany us for dinner? I actually wanted to get Britney Spears, David Beckham, Andy Lau or Lee Hom but in the end I just got myself a glass of Iced Lemon Tea (RM2.90). You are right! Those are the names of some of the beverages available in this restaurant. Julia Roberts (RM4.50) is actually a cocktail comprising watermelon, cucumber and honeydew juices. This drink is meant for those weight watchers.

FACES02

My friend and I started our dinner with Cream of Mushroom Soup with 2 slices of garlic toasts (RM4.50) and Seafood Tomato Soup (RM4.50). The Mushroom Soup tasted fine but was not as creamy as I have expected. On the other hand, the Seafood Tomato Soup has lots of seafood in it but a bit too sweet for my liking.

FACES03

FACES04

Seafood Mixed Grill (RM14.90) and Chicken Aux Champignons (RM7.90) followed as our main courses. The Seafood Mixed grill was with lots of mussels, prawns, fish and cuttlefish. It came topped with black pepper gravy. The dish tasted good but I would prefer to have thicker gravy for that. The Chicken Aux Champignons came with some sliced button mushrooms on top of a grilled and deboned chicken drumstick. Not bad but there was nothing spectacular about the gravy. Both the dishes came with lots of French fries, mixed vegetables, broccoli and some salad.

FACES05

FACES06

The whole restaurant was dimly lighted with an oil lamp on every table. I would say it’s quite a romantic place for courting couples. Haha! I went the with the intention of getting a whole heart but the temptation was too great. I ended up breaking the heart apart. Why not? Isn’t a Heart Shaped Fried Ice Cream (RM2.50) meant to be broken into two before consuming? 😛 Well, this dessert was real nice with Rum & Raisins Ice Cream inside. The skin is actually made of white bread and fried in hot boiling oil while the content still maintains it coldness. This is a must try for those who have yet to try out this dessert.

FACES07

FACES08

Finding the restaurant is real easy. If you are coming from town towards Tanjung Tokong, just watch out for a traffic light on your right with Subaidah Nasi Kandar at the corner lot. Turn right into the traffic light and you will see the restaurant there. There is free parking next door.

PASTA & PIE @ NORTHAM BEACH CAFE

Posted by Criz Lai On June - 19 - 2008

PASTAPIE01

“Hey Jon! Where’s my lasagna?” Hmm… Where have I heard this before? Yea… it’s me! Haha. I felt like I have a part of Garfield hidden inside me as I am always craving for lasagna. After searching in many Italian restaurants for lasagna that’s good and affordable, I ended up in Pasta & Pie at Northern Beach Café again and again. Why? It is because the dish can be ordered as ala carte or in a set which will cost you not more than RM16.90. I ordered the set as I can get an appetizer, a main and a dessert at a much lesser price.

You have a few choices to choose from and I chose the Mushroom Carrot Soup. The soup is thick and creamy and it comes with a breadstick. This is how I always love my soup to be. Yummy!

PASTAPIE03

“Thou shalt not touch my lasagna!” Right! You got it! The lasagna is my favorite but the portion is too small to be shared with anyone else. The smell from the melted cheese and the smoothness of the meat and lasagna pasta has always sent me craving for more. It’s a must to try.

PASTAPIE02

As for dessert, I chose the Pumpkin Cheese Pie as it was not too filling compared to the many varieties of chocolate cakes and apple pies the stall has. The top of the slice of Pumpkin Cheese Pie was baked with crunchy almonds slices and accompanied with yummy custard sauce.

PASTAPIE04

There are many other pies which I have tasted before such as the Chicken Pot Pie, Shepherd’s Pie, Mushroom Chicken Pie and many other sweet pies that are really good as well. In fact, you can even custom ordered your birthday cakes, wedding cakes, dessert & sweet for your tea party by contacting Tony days before your function.

To get there is real easy. Just drive along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah where the Northam Hotel is and turn left into the Northam Beach Café. The stall is strategically located within the dining area.

HOME RECIPE FOOD CORNER

Posted by Criz Lai On June - 14 - 2008

HOMERECIPE01

I was at Prangin Mall few days back and had lunch with one of my friends during his lunch break. We decided to drop by Home Recipe Food Corner since the set meals there looked reasonable with a net price of not more RM14. Set meals meant to be fast right? But that wasn’t the treatment we had received. With the limited one hour of lunch time, we had to forgo the desserts and yet paid for the same amount. I will tell you the reasons at the end of the post.

The set meals came with free drinks, one Iced Lemon Tea and one Lime Juice. Both tasted extremely sweet. It’s bad for those healthy conscious people.

HOMERECIPE02

Next came the soup of the day – Mushroom Soup. The soups were diluted but yet edible. I doubt that it is made from some secret home recipes.

HOMERECIPE03

Here were the main courses we had – Cheese Satay Chicken Chop (RM13.90 set) and Sour Plum Chicken Chop (RM12.90 set). The Cheese Satay Chicken Chop presentation was real impressive with baked cheese on top but the taste was just normal. Nothing special and the chicken chop size was rather small. The Sour Plum Chicken Chop on the other hand was also the same, nothing special. I guessed the chef did not marinate the meat before hand.

HOMERECIPE04

HOMERECIPE05

As for the desserts, we had some problems with that. It was to be fresh cut fruits and a scoop of ice cream. We waited almost 25 minutes after the main course but we were not served at all. I was rather irritated by their service. 3 staff and a chef but no one served us. Not that the place is extremely big not to notice us. One staff was busy checking out the latest fashion trend opposite the shop. One was busy chatting with the other and the chef did not even push them to check on the completion the customer’s set meals.

My advice to the boss, do not get school boys and girls to handle your business if they are not serious at all. You may lose your business. After all, they only realized about their faults after we had decided to pay and leave for work. So what would you choose? Take the delayed serving of desserts or get a black record in your company for coming back late? As for my recommendation on this place, I won’t advice at all unless you are extremely hungry to consume the whole set courses and with ample time in hand.

LA FRANCE

Posted by Criz Lai On June - 12 - 2008

Note: This little French stall has now relocated to a big mansion at 3B Jalan Irrawaddi, Penang effective September 2011. Business Hours: 12pm-10.30pm (Closed Tuesday)

LAFRANCE01

Bienvenue à la La France! Est-ce que je peux vous aider? Que voudriez-vous avoir hui?Oops! I have forgotten that I am not in France but I am surely having French food over here now. Haha! By the way, those words meant “Welcome to La France! How can I help you? What would you like to have today?” Why was I mumbling in French when I am right here in Penang, Malaysia? Well, here’s the answer. Please read on.

Have you been to the Northam Beach Café for the past 6 months? You would have noticed that there is a stall selling French food by a young couple. The hubby is a Frenchman whereas the wife is our local Chinese who can speak real fluent Hokkien. One look at the menu and you might be wondering why they are serving omelettes, crepes and Ciabatta or white breads during dinner time. As for the locals, those are for breakfast. For the French, those dishes are homemade food that you can get practically anytime of the day.

How was the food then? I would say I was very impressed with the quality of food served. Although it was not fine dining, it was one of the best French food that I had taken locally in years. The breads were of good quality, so were the crepes which were freshly made on spot. As for price, it was a good bargain for the quality food served. We managed to try out the Marine Provencal (RM9.80) which consists of a long Ciabatta Bread filled with large chunks of tuna fish mixed with Mozarella Cheese and sprinkles with herbs. It came accompanied with coleslaw and Pomme Frite (French Fries). It was marvelous!

LAFRANCE02

As for dessert, we ordered the Crepe Peanut Banana (RM4.80). It has thin soft crepe filled with banana precooked with grounded cinnamon and herbs. The crepe came in pairs with garnishes such as chocolate, grounded peanuts and icing sugar. Well, the French are the experts in decorating their food. This dish is a must try for those sweet tooth people out there. Do you know what is so great about this place? It’s MSG free for a healthier diet and most importantly, it’s tax free!

LAFRANCE03

If you have the opportunity to be there, do also try out their Omelette Fromage, Omelette Jambon-Fromage, Omelette Forestiere and Omelette Primeurs. To get there is real easy. Just drive along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah where the Northam Hotel is and turn left into the Northam Beach Café. The stall is strategically located within the dining area.

YAW’S ROAST AND GRILL

Posted by Criz Lai On June - 9 - 2008

YAWS01

Have you heard of Yaw’s Roast & Grill before? Maybe this name is rather new to you but this western food corner used to be from one of the famous western food restaurants along Jalan Burmah in Penang many years ago. It was formerly called Top Top Snack Bar & Restaurant. The western food corner has been operating there for many years in a residential house. The taste for the food served has not change but the menu surely increased a lot.

If you love to have some quiet moments in a nice and cozy place, spending some romantic moments as well in a dim lighted corner, do check out this place. The best is that you do not need to pay extra for whatever taxes that you normally pay in any other restaurants.

YAWS02

Since I was around that area, I decided to patronize this place with a friend. We ordered the Soup of the Day @ Onion Soup (RM6.50) as appetizer, Black Pepper Chicken Chop (RM7.50) and a Chicken Minced (RM8.80). All together plus drinks, we paid only RM25.80 which is reasonable for such quality food.

Garlic toasts were given complimentary from the kitchen, slightly toasted to perfection with yummy garlic butter and herbs.

YAWS03

The Onion Soup was also perfect, creamy yet did not have the over-powering taste of onions at all. It came garnished with some crouton (small pieces of deep fried cubed bread) and celery.

YAWS04

The Black Pepper Chicken Chop was also great. It has crunchy deep fried chicken topped with thick not-so-hot black pepper gravy, suitable for kids too. In fact, I did ask for an extra bowl of the gravy without additional cost incurred.

YAWS05

If you are a potato lover, you would love this dish – the Chicken Minced. It is actually a ring of buttered mashed potatoes, slightly baked and garnish with the chef’s special creamy chicken cube gravy. This is a must to try out. Do not underestimate the look of the portion served. It is really very filling.

YAWS06

To get to the place might be quite confusing as it is hidden from the main access road with no signage at all. If you are coming from town towards 1-Stop Midlands Centre, you will see Convent Pulau Tikus on your right. Turn into the road (Lebuhraya Maktab) immediately after that. Drive forward and turn into the second road (Jalan Midlands) on your left. As you reach the first junction (Gerbang Midlands) on your left, find a parking space nearby. The place is just at the corner house.

FRANCIS FUSION WESTERN FOOD

Posted by Criz Lai On April - 28 - 2008

NOTE: Effective 19 December 2009, Francis Fusion Western Food will be relocated to Poly Cafe (opposite the present location, directly next to Bellisa Row/3rd shoplot after Lorong Leandros) GPS: 5.432602,100.310738)

FRANCIS01

You do not have to go to steakhouse and pay exuberant prices just to have your Western Food. With Francis Fusion Western food in Pulau Tikus, you can anytime enjoy the taste and fusion style of Western dishes at a much lower price. You would not believe that a small stall in an old coffee shop could have provided with such extraordinary and delicious food.

What made Francis Western Food the ideal place to patron? Well, he was with the Western section of a 5-Star Hotel in Singapore before he moved back to Penang to be with his family. Moreover, his style of cooking and taste are totally different compared to any other normal Western food stalls around Penang. In fact, he is the only stall in Penang that provides fusion style of cooking combining many different herbs and cooked either as deep fried, sauté, grill, or baked. His love and personal touch in preparing his side dishes and salads are something that made him real proud. All his meals would come accompanied with pineapple salad, potato chicken ham salad, French fries, or baked potatoes and crunchy garlic bread.

I have personally tried almost 80% of all his food in the menu (more than 50 choices) and have never ever had any complaints. Everything in the menu has its unique taste. We had our dinner recently there and ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu as well as the Baked Black Pepper Chicken. Both dishes cost us only RM17.50. One look at the photos and I can assure you that you would be thinking of another visit there.

FRANCIS02

FRANCIS03

Some of my personal recommendations are the Cheesy Spaghetti, Baked Tom Yam Fish, Baked Salmon with Orange Lemon Butter, Chef’s Spicy Chicken, Baked Black Pepper Chicken, Cordon Blue, Mixed Grill, Ham Omelette, etc. Well, just order what you think is nice and surely you will not regret.

Kedai Kopi Guan Hiang which housed the Western Food stall is just at the junction of Jalan Cantonment and Jalan Burmah in Pulau Tikus. Do also check out his special order during festive season as he would also specially prepare some rich moist Chocolate Cake, Mint Stuffed Turkey, etc and they are always the best around.

JEMPUTREE

Posted by Criz Lai On February - 19 - 2008

JEMPUTREE

Finally, there is a place called Jemputree in Penang where we can sit around to have decent chats with soft music at the background and good ambience. The place has the feel of a rainforest blended in with small huts as if you are living in a tribal village. There is also a place to get that tree house experience. Moreover, you can have the privacy you ever wanted and a group of friendly “natives” to serve to all your dining needs.

JEMPUTREE AMBIENCE

Jemputree has a wide range of Malaysian’s mouth watering delights with variations that include Malay, Western & Oriental style of culinary choices. You can get meals from finger food to spicy dishes and pasta. There are also many local desserts and beverages that will make your stay worthwhile such as ais kacang, rojak, ginseng tongkat ali and rainbow. Below are some of the dishes I have ordered:

SOUP OF THE DAY

NASI LEMAK KAMPUNG

TOM YAM MAGGIE MEE

You might want to visit the place at the location mentioned below:
