CRIZ BON APPETITE

Savoring The Best All Over Town…

Archive for March, 2017

For those who had travelled to Taipei, Taiwan and visited the Danshui Old Street (淡水老街) in search of great food, the aromatic scent of the freshly baked old school style egg sponge cake (Ji Dan Gao/雞蛋糕) from one specific shop might still be in your memory vividly. That would indeed be the reminiscence of our childhood days when we enjoyed the fragrance and flavorful egg cake in its most basic form before the pastry industry had gone through years of creative evolutions. Penangites would be in luck now as one such shop by the name on Tam Sui Old Taste Cake of Taiwan (淡水現烤古早味雞蛋糕) had set its foot on the shore of Penang with its maiden operation today.

 photo TAMSUI01_zpsp7cgjero.jpg

Unlike many of the bakeries out there, the shop utilized the basic concept of open kitchen where all the processes of cakes can be seen and each of the freshly baked cake would be immediately cut in a thick slab of 4”x8” pieces and sold right in front of your eyes.

 photo TAMSUI02_zpscynqdihl.jpg

Compared to those sold in Taipei, the bakery here has 3 different flavors available, namely Original (原味古早味雞蛋糕 – RM14nett), Cheese (雙層芝士古早味雞蛋糕 – RM18nett) and Chocolate (暴漿朱古力古早味雞蛋糕 – RM20 – only available effectively 1 April 2017 onwards at 12.00noon and 6.00pm daily except on closed days on Tuesdays).

 photo TAMSUI03_zpsst91g9ve.jpg

As this is another new outlet opening in Penang, you would expect to encounter huge crowds forming and queueing within and outside the shop. Since everyone would be anxiously waiting to pick up their fresh bakes during each round of the baking time, do spend some time after paying your bills to indulge in their fresh coffee brews. There will be some tables setup to cater to your needs. I’ve tried their Hot Latte (RM8.90nett) and found it to have the right bitterness and creaminess to my liking.

 photo TAMSUI04_zpsa8i2dnur.jpg

Overall, the texture of this old school style egg sponge cake was not as cottony as what you would find in the Japanese style cheese sponge cake but it’s firmer, heavier with more bites. Personally, I quite like their signature cheese version with double layers of oozing cheese complemented well with the mild sweetness of the original eggy flavors.

For those who are from outstation, finding the road leading to the shop can be a bit tricky. Though the shop is located just along the service road of Jalan Mesjid Negeri, it would be quite tough especially when you are at the other side of the main road. If you are travelling via Jalan Mesjid Negeri towards Penang Bridge, immediately after you see the Petronas petrol kiosk, turn left into Lebuhraya Batu Lanchang. Drive on and keep to your right until you reach the traffic lights (KFC Batu Lanchang is on your left). Turn right into the road and drive on. Turn right at the second junction before the playground (Batu Green). Drive until the end and you can see the shop at the left corner unit.

FRIDAY NIGHT POOLSIDE BBQ BUFFET AT THE ROYALE BINTANG PENANG

Posted by crizlai On March - 18 - 2017

Note: Effective 1 May 2017, Royale Bintang Penang will be renamed as Royale Chulan Penang

Fridays are the days to look forward to each month as The Royale Bintang Penang has been serving great spreads of BBQ items for quite many years – Friday Night Poolside BBQ Buffet. Priced at RM88.00nett (Adult) and RM44.00nett (Child: 6-12 years old/Senior Citizen: 60 years old and above), diners can enjoy the cool breeze of the night by dining next to the hotel’s swimming pool. The spread can be quite extensive, starting from boutique salad, salad bar, soup, hot dishes, long live stations, meat to order bar, DIY hawker dish to a wide selection of desserts and fruit cuts at their Sweet Seventeen station. Don’t forget to enjoy your free-flow of coffee or tea after your hefty meal too.

 photo ROYALEBINTANGBBQ01_zpsjdsko8y8.jpg

To start off your meal, do check out the salad and soup station for some sumptuous local and international fare. What caught my attention was the Sup Tulang Rawan Kambing which was pepped with fragrantly selected herbs and spices. It was indeed something delicious to boost up the appetite for more feasts to come. Moreover, it was great to find some local street dish such as the Sotong Kangkung and Thai-style salads such as the Seafood Glass Noodles Salad as well as Mango & Papaya Salad amongst the spreads.

 photo ROYALEBINTANGBBQ02_zpsrpr3xyul.jpg

 photo ROYALEBINTANGBBQ03_zpsqd3ebdhu.jpg

As for the Hot Dishes Station, you have some fried rice and noodles but what interests me was the Baked Pumpkin Wedges which I rarely see at most BBQ buffet. The Jacket Potatoes with Chives Sour Cream was also one great side dishes to go with the BBQ items.

 photo ROYALEBINTANGBBQ04_zpsgcycfa36.jpg

The BBQ and street food adventure would begin at the Long Live Stations and Meat To Order Bar where the aroma along from the wonderful grills would send your saliva dripping furiously. The tender and juiciness from the Royale Spiced Roasted Whole Lamb and flavorful Grilled Minute Steaks are some of the items to look out for. Don’t missed out the Samurai Burger too as the patties were in-house made with perfection.

 photo ROYALEBINTANGBBQ08_zpsgsoad7gn.jpg

 photo ROYALEBINTANGBBQ06_zpsyldkh4te.jpg

There’s always some part of the stomach left for some desserts. Do check out the Dessert Station with a mixed of local delicacies to some international cakes and puddings. I quite like the Pengat Pisang Sago which was pepped up with the fragrantly acclaimed Gula Melaka.

You can check out the full spreads available on each Friday night as per menu below. Do click for a better viewing.

Overall, I’m quite satisfied with the spreads for the Friday Night Poolside BBQ Buffet, especially those red meat choices where the meat had that smoky flavors on top of the nice marinates. The best part would be midway into the buffet where the staff would bring out the “surprise” – slipper lobsters. Those mini lobsters are to die for as they were indeed super delicious to resist.

Do also check out their flyers for more promotions.

  • Tanjung Set Lunch available every Monday to Saturday (12.00pm-2.30pm)

Penang is known as the food haven of Malaysia and the Royale Bintang Penang also prides itself on the food served that leaves its guests coming back for more. To encourage the guests to come back regularly for the food, The Royale Bintang Penang also launched the “I Love To Makan” monthly Facebook photo contest last year. Guests who dine at any of the food outlets will need to just take a photo of them dining and post it on the hotel’s official Facebook page. The picture with the most number of likes will win attractive prizes from the hotel.

“Penang is one of the most dynamic destinations for business and leisure travel. With the hotel’s unique historical and architectural buildings steeped in British Colonial style, it blends together the modern and multi ethnic heritage of the people who call Penang “home”. It’s been an amazing 3 years and we hope to continue providing luxurious comfort and full amenities for the leisure travellers as well as the perfect setting for celebrations, business meetings and corporate events.” said Philip D. Theseira, General Manager of The Royale Bintang Penang.

As you enter the lobby of the hotel, just walk to the elevator and go to Level 2 of the heritage building. You can see the poolside BBQ there.

With the presence of Empire Sushi kiosks conveniently available in most of the major malls throughout Kedah, Penang and Selangor, Malaysians can now purchase a large varieties of halal-friendly sushi fuss-free and speedily. Recently, we paid a visit to one of these kiosks at Gurney Plaza, Penang, and found the texture of the sushi to be at its best quality with the freshest ingredients.

 photo EMPIRESUSHI01_zpsck5npc3g.jpg

The kiosk here at Gurney Plaza has at least 78 varieties of hand-crafted sushi and maki, with more options for temaki and onigiri to tempt your Japanese finger food cravings. Just on Inari Sushi itself, there are altogether 17 versions and I can assure you that all of them passed my fussy taste bud. Some of my choices of these versions were Egg, Tuna Cheese, Ebiko, Salmon, Idako, Tempura Ebi, Salmon Mayo and Unagi.

The rest of the sushi which were out of this world delicious to watch out for would be their Tempura Ebi Roll (RM2.60), Unagi Cheese Roll (RM2.60, Spicy Roll (RM2.40), Chicken Meat Slice Roll (RM2.40), Salmon Roll (RM2.60), Cheese Roll (RM2.40), Tobikko Cheese Roll (RM2.40) and more.

Overall, I do love the many choices of sushi not only due to its freshness but the firmness and juiciness of the vinegar infused Japanese rice. They are so flavorful that you can practically eat it without any additional condiments.
