MAGMAL01 photo MAGMAL01_zpsb07bca04.jpg

To start off, you might get to savor some Malaysian hawker fare dishes such as the Chicken Satay with Condiments (沙爹雞肉串), Pasembur with Peanut Sauce (印度鮮魚配花生醬) or Sup Ekor (牛尾湯). Skews of succulent and well marinated chicken chunks, an assorted of fritters with thick and creamy spicy peanut sauce plus herbs and spices pepped up oxtail soup are some of the Malaysians’ favorites.

MAGMAL02 photo MAGMAL02_zps8b564cb5.jpg

As for main dishes, you would expect to find Daging Rendang Tok (仁當牛肉), Ikan Panggang (烤魚), Assam Prawns (亞參蝦), Ayam Percik (香料烤雞), Kambing Masala (馬薩拉羊), Tempe Masak Sambal (叁巴炒天貝), served with some nicely spiced up Nasi Briyani (印度香飯). I so fell in love with their Ayam Percik as it had just the right combination of spices combined with the fragrant flavors from the added coconut milk.

MAGMAL03 photo MAGMAL03_zps5fc391ae.jpg

For desserts, you would expect to have the Ice Kacang (紅豆冰), Assorted Malay Kuih (馬來糕點) or Banana Fritters (煎香蕉). Their Ice Kacang was one of the best I have tasted. So was the Banana Fritters.

You may be in for a surprise to find whole fruits or fresh fruit cuts being served first at the main buffet line. Well, they are right in the major rule of consuming fruits first, meals later. Haha~ Ideally, fruits should be consumed at least an hour before meal or two hours after meal but most Asians don’t follow the golden rule, do they? LOL~ The main reason behind this method of dining, is that your digestive process would work quicker by empowering different enzymes to break the fruits into nutrients, fiber and fructose for easier absorption into your body, thus gaining the maximum benefits from the process. So, remember to eat your fruits first before any meal~ 🙂 The Eatery would serve a variety of local tropical and imported fruits such as red dragon fruits, white dragon fruits, duku langsat, rambutans, papayas, ciku, pineapples, jackfruits, watermelons, grapes, apples, oranges, honeydews and more. Do check out the little compartment below the chiller as there would be different condiments for your fruits such as strawberry sauce, orange sauce, sour plum powder and rojak sauce, pounded peanuts, maple syrup and more. That’s what I call a healthy meal before a hearty meal~ Love it!

4PRAMADHAN201402 photo 4PRAMADHAN201402_zps18faa419.jpg

The special spreads for the evening was prepared by the skillful Chef Shafiq. Dishes would differ from week to week on a rotation basis. Firstly, let’s start with some assorted crackers followed by some ulam-ulaman (fresh garden vegetables and herbs) with unique condiments such as the sambal cincalok (Fermeneted Krill – Melaka), sambal hijau (Green Chilies & Anchovies – Johor), sambal budu (Fermeneted Seafood – Kelantan & Terengganu), sambal tempoyak (Durian Sambal – Perak), sambal kicap pedas and sambal belacan. You would also get Nasi Himpit/Ketupat Raya (Rice), Ketupat Daun Palas (Glutinous Rice) and Lemang (Glutinous Rice) together with Serunding Daging and Serunding Ayam. For pickle lovers, there would be the assorted fruit pickles, some savories items, kerabu and acar such as Kerabu Udang dengan So Hoon (Glass Noodles Spicy Salad), Kerabu Kacang Botol, Kerabu Telur Permata Hati, Jelatah, Acar Buah-buahan and more. There would also be some soup based dishes such as Noodle Soup, Bubur Lambuk and Sup Ekor.

Overall, the dishes served here during the holy month had more touches of Malay cuisine compared to their normal daily spread throughout the year.

The Eatery @ Four Points By Sheraton is located along the main road of Jalan Tanjung Bunga. To get there, just use the road going towards the beaches of Batu Ferringhi. As you reach a curving part of the road, keep to your right after the first traffic lights (Chinese Swimming Club on your right). At the second traffic lights, turn right into the hotel’s premises to find a car park. Walk straight into the lobby and you can find The Eatery located at the ring wing of the hotel.

Honest and uncomplicated, Four Points by Sheraton Penang is located on the main road connecting UNESCO World Cultural Heritage city Georgetown and Batu Ferringhi, a popular beach area. The hotel is situated on a stretch of white sandy beach overlooking the shimmering sea of Tanjung Bungah. For the whole month of July 2014, Swez Brasserie @ Eastin Hotel, Penang, would be having its Peranakan Cuisine Promotion (1-31 July 2014). The Peranakan cuisine or more commonly known as the Nyonya cuisine, is a cuisine combination of Chinese (different origins), Malay and other influences such as Thai and Indian into a unique blend of its own. This promotion would be under the skillful hands of the Asian Kitchen Chef, Chef Chan Teik Onn.

EASTINNYONYA201401 photo EASTINNYONYA201401_zpsc02f9219.jpg

Firstly, you would get to savor the Deep Fried Chicken Lobak (炸鸡肉卷), a Nyonya favorite meat roll which consisted of marinated chicken slices in 5-spice powder and some added jicama rolled in dry bean curd sheet. This is one common dish you would find at most economy rice stalls.

EASTINNYONYA201402 photo EASTINNYONYA201402_zps01fcd499.jpg

You would also get to savor the super time consuming dish known as the Nasi Ulam (野菜饭食). Sometimes also known as the Jungle Herbs Rice, this dish is definitely a very healthy diet as most of the ingredients are taken raw. This is one of my favorite dishes with the fragrance coming from some added deep fried salted fish and dry shrimps. Though it’s one of the hardest dishes to make, you might want to check out the ingredients in my recipe.

EASTINNYONYA201403 photo EASTINNYONYA201403_zps3184d502.jpg

The next dish which was the Assam Prawns (亚参虾) had nicely marinated prawns with tamarind, a light touch of sugar and soy sauce. However, I still don’t like the idea of using tiger prawns instead of the ideal white/green shelled prawns as it won’t bring out the true flavors of this dish.

EASTINNYONYA201404 photo EASTINNYONYA201404_zps603c1939.jpg

To all the kids, the next dish is everyone’s favorite – the Inchi Kabin (娘惹式炸鸡). In a Nyonya family, everyone has their own secret recipe for this wonderful deep fried chicken. Some would add curry powder with some dashes of coconut milk. Some would just have them with turmeric powder with some added coriander powder. Some would have a bit of each spice which would include cinnamon, fennel, cloves, etc. Overall, no matter how the chicken pieces (mostly chicken wings) were marinated, any piece of freshly fried chicken would surely boost up anyone’s appetite for more.

EASTINNYONYA201405 photo EASTINNYONYA201405_zps15202ec4.jpg

You would also have the Jiu Hoo Char (Stir Fried Shredded Dry Cuttlefish with Vegetables/鱿鱼炒蔬菜), a dish consisted of julienned jicama, carrots, Chinese mushroom and French beans stir fried with some dried cuttlefish. This is one of the signature dishes in Peranakan cuisine and best taken with some Chinese lettuce and sambal belacan.

EASTINNYONYA201406 photo EASTINNYONYA201406_zps3e29ecaf.jpg

As for desserts, you would get to savor the Assorted Nyonya Kuih (各式娘惹糕点), which had some resemblances to the Malay kuih.

EASTINNYONYA201407 photo EASTINNYONYA201407_zps3f67b028.jpg

Overall, the cuisine served would be quite standard as you would get from the eateries out there. However, Peranakan/Nyonya cuisine can be rather time consuming in terms of preparation, so I guessed we might as well enjoy the chefs’ hard work in storming up those herbs and spiced infused dishes.

Here’s the summary of the promotion.

For the holy month of Ramadan this year, Swez Brasserie @ Eastin Hotel, Penang, would be having its Ramadan Buffet Dinner from 29 June until 27 July 2014 (6.30pm – 10.00pm). Price per head for adults would be at RM88++/pax while a child would be at RM44++/pax. The Ramadan Buffet Dinner would consist of delicious authentic Malay cuisine the traditional kampong style under the experienced hands of the Jr. Sous Chefs, Chef Mohamad Bakri and Chef Mohd Fauzi.

EASTINRAMADAN201401 photo EASTINRAMADAN201401_zps9e2b44cd.jpg

One of the more notable dishes for more energy and stamina would be their signature Sup Gearbox (牛骨煲汤), one great dish that I would always look forward to every year during their promotion. The spices and herbs used in slowly simmering the bull’s thigh bones combined with some potatoes and carrots were indeed “powerful”. A bowl of this heavenly dish would surely keep the body energetic and rejuvenated for any activities during the fasting month.

EASTINRAMADAN201402 photo EASTINRAMADAN201402_zps4535e182.jpg

Another of the appetizers would be the Kerabu Nangka (Young Jackfruit Salad/凉拌菠萝蜜). The young jackfruits were specially cooked in such a way that the flesh remained tender such, almost similar to the texture of young coconut flesh. These would be then tossed with some ginger flowers, kerisik (toasted desiccated coconut), toasted belacan (shrimp paste), boiled chicken breast meat, etc, with a light squeeze of lime juice. I love the unique flavors a lot.

EASTINRAMADAN201403 photo EASTINRAMADAN201403_zps76bce365.jpg

The next dish which was the Kerabu Udang with So Hoon (马来式凉拌虾和冬粉) was something very appetizing. It had the similar spiciness and sourness as the former dish but with the tossing in of some glass noodles. It was super delicious with the usage of juicy prawns in abundance.

EASTINRAMADAN201404 photo EASTINRAMADAN201404_zps2b0e37e5.jpg

Next in the list was the Gado Gado (马来式冷盘), an Indonesia originated salad dish with thick and mildly spicy peanut base dressing. Instead of the usage of crackers, it had deep fried tempeh added as one of the choices. The crispy tempeh blended in real well with the rest of the ingredients.

EASTINRAMADAN201405 photo EASTINRAMADAN201405_zpsb6f58677.jpg

A “buka puasa” meal would not be complete without the Ulam-ulaman (assorted fresh greens/凉拌各式马来风味小菜). This combination of raw vegetables and herbs went well with the provided sambal belacan condiment. Occasionally, you might get other condiments such as the Sambal Cincaluk (Salted Baby Shrimps Sambal) and Sambal Mempelam (Mango Sambal).

EASTINRAMADAN201406 photo EASTINRAMADAN201406_zps3617c8b7.jpg

They do also serve Acar Buah (马来式甜酸水果腌渍), a Malay style of spicy sweet assorted fruit pickles. This pickle would go well with fried items especially fish.

EASTINRAMADAN201407 photo EASTINRAMADAN201407_zps59b5aa06.jpg

As for main course, you would get to try out their Seafood Bubur Lambuk (香浓海鲜椰浆粥), a porridge of various combinations, which contained coconut milk that would normally be distributed to the public for free by those surrounding mosques. This version came with rich flavors from sliced prawns, squids, mussels and vegetables.

EASTINRAMADAN201408 photo EASTINRAMADAN201408_zps665e2c5f.jpg

For sure, you won’t want to miss out their Nasi Tomato with Raisins (Tomato Rice with raisins/葡萄干番茄饭). You can taste out the rich flavors from each rice grain with has fresh tomatoes, cloves, star anise, cardamom, curry leaves with chopped almonds, green peas and raisins as garnishing. The tomato rice texture was fluffy with added fragrant from the toasted almonds and sweetness from the added raisins. Thumbs up!

EASTINRAMADAN201409 photo EASTINRAMADAN201409_zpscaca3490.jpg

To go with the rice, there would always be some nicely pepped up meat dishes such as the Ayam Masak Merah (传统马来咖喱鸡), a traditional Malay red curry with tomato puree plus a combination of herbs and spices. It had thick gravy which I love a lot from the usage of lots of blended onions. This dish is not spicy at all and would suit all ages.

EASTINRAMADAN201410 photo EASTINRAMADAN201410_zpse225ecab.jpg

For seafood, we had the Udang Masala (马萨拉虾), basically prawns stir fried with chilies and spices with a light tad of sourness. The dish was quite similar to those you see at the Nasi Kandar shops. Taste wise, I prefer another species of prawns rather than the hard-shelled prawns they were using.

EASTINRAMADAN201411 photo EASTINRAMADAN201411_zps7d6f315d.jpg

Sometimes, simplicity would surely rule. I immediately felt in love with their Vegetables Dalca (咖喱扁豆蔬菜). This popular Hyderabadi dish, in which contained lots of dal, spices and vegetables, slowly simmered to get the full richness of the pulses, complimented truly well with just any type of spiced up rice such as the tomato rice, nasi briyani or plain steamed rice.

EASTINRAMADAN201412 photo EASTINRAMADAN201412_zps97c2b913.jpg

For lamb and mutton lovers, do watch out for their Gulai Kambing Kerutuk Pantai Timur (马来式东海岸闷羊咖哩). Not many people outside Kelantan had tasted this delicious lamb dish which is a big sweeter than the sister-like rendang as it uses gula Melaka or brown sugar in the recipe.

EASTINRAMADAN201413 photo EASTINRAMADAN201413_zps67f83bb9.jpg

As for dessert, we had an assortment of Malay Kuih (各式马来糕点) which would be served based on availability.

EASTINRAMADAN201414 photo EASTINRAMADAN201414_zps56dfdd22.jpg

You can also try out their Bubur Kacang Hijau (绿豆椰奶), a sweet mung beans porridge with coconut milk. Who knows since it’s durian season and they might add in a light touch of fresh durian flesh? 😛

EASTINRAMADAN201415 photo EASTINRAMADAN201415_zpsa752c027.jpg

They would also be some Western cakes added into the menu such as the Red Velvet Cake (红丝绒蛋糕). I’m sure you would like to try it out as it would be made by their in-house experienced pastry chefs.

EASTINRAMADAN201416 photo EASTINRAMADAN201416_zpsf017e483.jpg

Overall, the Ramadan Buffet Dinner spreads have always been one of my favorites, considering that the dishes were flavorfully prepared by the two experienced Malay chefs. Their dishes are always very family-oriented with a nice touch of kampong style cooking. Well done~ 🙂

Bank Islam credit and debit card members are entitled to a 15% discount of total bill during Ramadan Buffet Dinner (Monday – Sunday, 6.30 pm – 10.00pm) while Citibank and Maybank credit and debit card members can enjoy a Pay for 5 persons and the 6th person dines for FREE during Ramadan Buffet Dinner (Monday – Sunday, 6.30 pm – 10.00pm).

SENSATIONAL SPREADS AT T.G.I. FRIDAYS PENANG BRANCHES

Posted by crizlai On May - 23 - 2014

I’m sure T.G.I. Fridays (TGIF) is no longer a new name in the F&B industry as it’s an international chain of casual dining venues spread all over 58 countries. In Malaysia alone, there are 18 outlets in four major states such as Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Penang. Penang itself has two outlets located at Queensbay Mall and Gurney Paragon Mall. So what’s so great about visiting TGIF? It’s famous for mouthwatering American classics ranging from appetizers to memorable burgers and delicious desserts. It’s also a great venue to hang out with family and friends as their serving portions can be real huge, not forgetting its distinctive and different spread of choices on its menu.

TGIF01 photo TGIF01_zps7b32336b.jpg

To start off, it would be great if you could order a starter to share out prior to waiting for your main dishes to arrive steaming hot from the kitchen. Great food would need some time to be prepared to perfection right? Let’s start with the Fridays Three-For-all (RM41.90++), a favorite amongst diners. It’s one big platter with their famous Loaded Potato Skins with beef bits (You can request to opt for chicken bits if you are not a beef consumer), Fried Mozzarella and their spicy Buffalo Wings, served with sour cream & green onions, marinara sauce and celery sticks with Bleu cheese dressing.

TGIF02 photo TGIF02_zps0383c467.jpg

The Americans love steaks and what would be the best than to order their recommended Australian air-flown grain-fed beef. The Sirloin Steak (RM47.90) was seasoned well and fire-grilled based on my preference of medium-rare texture. The steak was topped with my choice of black pepper sauce and served with my choice of 2 side dishes which were broccoli with garlic butter and cheddar cheese mashed potatoes. Other choice of sauces include wild mushroom butter and chimichurri pesto while side dishes options may also include grilled New Orleans corn cob, crispy fries, herbed rice and bean 7 broccoli blend.

TGIF03 photo TGIF03_zps0dbe1e9f.jpg

For a lighter and less meaty meal, you may also opt for their Key West Whitefish (RM32.90++), a mildly roasted whitefish topped with a sparkling citrus splash, served with seasonal vegetables and herbed rice. The tanginess of the sauce went well with the herbed rice.

TGIF04 photo TGIF04_zpsb14f171d.jpg

A meal won’t be complete minus desserts. Of course, I would surely go for their all-time favorite of Brownie Obsession (RM18.90++). The oozy warm brownie covered in chocolate-fudge and caramel sauce, served with vanilla ice cream was something any sweet tooth diner won’t miss.

TGIF05 photo TGIF05_zps75e40f90.jpg

Overall, the dishes served at both the Penang outlets were up to par. The portions served were huge for an Asian appetite. Moreover, there were quite a lot of options even for burgers, pastas and desserts lovers.

Kali Orexi! Bon Appétit! Welcome to the Greek Grandeur Promotion for May 2014 (1-31 May 2014) at Swez Brasserie @ Eastin Hotel, Penang. Jr. Sous Chef, Chef Mohamad Bakri with the help of his team members. The Greek cuisine has a history of thousands of years with the usage of fresh ingredients from the land and sea from the Mediterraneans.

EASTINGREEK201401 photo EASTINGREEK201401_zpse801d118.jpg

We started with some appetizers namely the Greek Mezze Platter (希腊小吃拼盘) which consists of assorted vegetables, risotto and minced lamb wraps, crispy tortilla and three type of dipping sauces, namely tuna yoghurt, cheesy dressing and Madras curry mayo. It was a total experience for many as we hardly had this type of almost similar middle-east appetizer.

EASTINGREEK201402 photo EASTINGREEK201402_zpscb255ce5.jpg

We also had the Classic Greek Salad (传统希腊沙拉), a basic salad with olives, capsicum, tomatoes zucchini and feta cheese dressed in olive oil, herbs and a light sprinkles of salt. It was simple but yet refreshing. Sometimes, this dish is also known as Horiatiki Salata.

EASTINGREEK201403 photo EASTINGREEK201403_zps38140fa2.jpg

We were also served with the Garides Saganaki (虾仁与番茄羊乳酪), another variant of Greek salad with added shrimps and a heavier usage of tomatoes. However, it was a bit different compared to the ones I had taken as ripened tomatoes were used instead to give the dish a more puree tomato like sweetness.

EASTINGREEK201404 photo EASTINGREEK201404_zpse73c4aa9.jpg

Next on the list was the Avgolemono (希腊鸡汤与蛋), a Greek Chicken Soup with Egg Lemon Sauce. As for taste, it really has the flavors those Campbell’s canned chicken mushroom soup. The soup somehow lacked the sweetness from the added vegetables and some fragrant from the usage of more bay leaves. By right there should be some risotto like rice texture in the soup but they could have been blended and mixed into the soup. Though it’s just a simple soup to cook, some adjustments are needed to perfect this soup.

EASTINGREEK201405 photo EASTINGREEK201405_zps643b4145.jpg

Basically, the Greek Beef Bifteki (希腊铁板牛肉) tasted like the beef burger but a roll-up version. It had more herbs infused in it with a mild cheesy flavor from the added feta cheese. This dish was served together with the Spanakorizo. The Spanakorizo (Traditional Spinach and Rice/传统菠菜与米) on the other hand is a Greek vegetarian dish which has a Risotto creamy and al dente type of texture. As for an Asian who’s so used to consume a softer texture of steamed rice, you may need some time to get use to this dish.

EASTINGREEK201406 photo EASTINGREEK201406_zps94d3a0a4.jpg

The main dish of Classic Greek Moussaka with Eggplant (希腊慕沙卡茄) is the Greek version of Lasagna-like dish with added eggplant. If you are a fan of lamb, you would surely like the strong flavors in the dish.

EASTINGREEK201407 photo EASTINGREEK201407_zps07b8175f.jpg

For pie lovers, you would surely like the Spanakopita (Spinach Pie/菠菜馅饼). It was filled with spinach and flavored with some eggs and feta cheese. Combined with the buttery crust, it was one dish I would love to have while watching movies. Haha~ 😛

EASTINGREEK201408 photo EASTINGREEK201408_zpse80da670.jpg

Who said the Greeks never skew grill their dishes? One lovely dish would be their Greek Chicken Souvlaki (希腊鸡肉蔬菜串). The skews had small chunks of well marinated chicken pieces and vegetables and grilled to perfection. These were served with a condiment of sour mint sauce.

EASTINGREEK201409 photo EASTINGREEK201409_zps686639f2.jpg

As for dessert, we were served with Baklava (果仁蜜饼), a nice flaky textured dessert made from layers of phyllo sheets and chopped nuts plus some honey.

EASTINGREEK201410 photo EASTINGREEK201410_zps1b130472.jpg

There was also the Amygdalota (Almond Cookies/杏仁曲奇). However, all of us found them to be of a harder texture which made biting a bit tough without dipping in a cup of hot beverage.

EASTINGREEK201411 photo EASTINGREEK201411_zps2af50ca4.jpg

The Galaktoboureko (Greek Custard Pie/希腊蛋奶饼) on the other hand tasted like a grainy and soaked up butter cake without the presence of added phyllo sheets for that crispiness. Though it was not the perfect dessert to my liking, it had a zesty flavor with a very light touch of added spices.

EASTINGREEK201412 photo EASTINGREEK201412_zpsbd5fbb73.jpg

Overall, the dishes served in the Greek Grandeur Promotion 2014 would suit those cheese lovers more as Greek cuisine utilized quite a lot of cheeses, olives, olive oil, eggplant, zucchini, yoghurt, mixed herbs, etc.

Here’s the summary of the promotion.

Sunday might not be the same again if you were to visit Four Points by Sheraton Penang to savor their Sunday Buffet in style. Under the leadership of the newly appointed Executive Chef, Israel Lazaroo, this Sunday Brunch would surely be a carefree family gathering for all to enjoy good times, great food and casual fun, whether within the indoor dining area or at the scenic alfresco outdoor areas. Furthermore, kids as well as young-at-heart adults would get to be in a carnival-filled ambience with ongoing activities with the presence of clowns and magicians. Priced at RM60+ (per adult) or RM30+ (per child 12 years old & above/per senior citizen 55 years old & above) per pax, there are many more discounts in store such as 20% off for Starwood Preferred Guests (SPG) members and discounts for selected credit card holders as high as 45% off. You can check out the dining offers at the hotel’s website. Terms and conditions apply. Children below 3 years old get to eat for free.

4PTSBRUNCH01 photo 4PTSBRUNCH01_zps6dcf37f9.jpg

The layout for the buffet spread for the Sunday Brunch differs compared to many hotels I have been to. Dishes would differ from week to week on a rotation basis. At the Appetizer Section where you would have dishes such as the International Salad Bar with selected greens and choices of dressings such as Thousand Island, Mayonnaise, Italian, Herb Basil. On top of that, there would also be some pre-prepared salads such as Seaweed in Sesame Oil, Thai Chicken Salad, Beef Salad, Crab Stick Salad and so on.

4PTSBRUNCH02 photo 4PTSBRUNCH02_zps7d0e0d5e.jpg

For a lighter eater, you would be impressed with their Live Sandwich Bar where you could create your own sandwiches. There would be a selection of breads such as Plain White, French Baguette, Whole meal and Croissant with selections of fillings and toppings such as Tuna, Eggs Mayo, Beef Bacon, Chicken Toast, Sardine, Smoked Salmon, Cheese, Tomato, Lettuce, Cucumber and more.

4PTSBRUNCH03 photo 4PTSBRUNCH03_zpse7e1bb18.jpg

Noodles lover would surely like their Noodles Station where selected hawker fare spreads would be available. The highlight for the day was Prawn Noodles, an impactful Penang favorite hawker dish filled with rich aroma and flavors.

4PTSBRUNCH04 photo 4PTSBRUNCH04_zpsd67d8284.jpg

There would also be the “Under the Sham” station where you could get a quick bite of Mini Chicken Burgers, Mini Seafood Pizza and more.

4PTSBRUNCH05 photo 4PTSBRUNCH05_zps32a3b165.jpg

As for starter, you would have the Soup Station with Soups of the Day such as Herbal Soup and Tomato Basil Soup, accompanied by fresh breads and butter. On top of that, you would also have the Steamed Basket with a selection of Dim Sums.

4PTSBRUNCH07 photo 4PTSBRUNCH07_zpsb1557616.jpg

Now let’s dig into the wide selections of hot dishes. Firstly, there’s the Chicken Rice Station where you would have some Steamed or Roasted Chicken Rice with Condiments served with tactfully prepared aromatic steamed rice. This buffet line would continue with more plain steamed rice and other hot dishes such as Chicken Piccata, Beef Stew, Sheppard’s Pie, Baked Pasta, Braised Lo Han Chai Vegetables, Chicken Curry with Roti Jala, Sweet & Sour Fish Fillets and Vegetarian Chicken Masala with Coriander. I would say all the dishes served here had the impactful flavors from the usages of different types of herbs and spices.

4PTSBRUNCH08 photo 4PTSBRUNCH08_zps9e6849fd.jpg

Last but not least, dessert lovers would love their Chef Eddie’s Dessert Collections where you would find items such as Tropical Fresh Fruit Platter, French & Danish Pastries, Assorted Malay Kuih, Bread & Butter Pudding, Green Beans Sweet Porridge, Chilled Iced Longan, Ice Cream & Ice Kacang with Condiments, and so on.

4PTSBRUNCH09 photo 4PTSBRUNCH09_zpsed477464.jpg

Overall, the dishes served had improved tremendously ever since Chef Israel Lazaroo, a Malaysian and maestro in Italian, French & Fusion cuisine, took over as the Executive Chef of Four Points by Sheraton Penang. With his two decades plus culinary experiences serving various hotels throughout Asia, he’s set to bring more surprises to the F&B sectors of the hotel.

Ideal for leisure and business travelers looking for a peaceful, yet convenient getaway, the hotel is 12 minutes from the bustling city center and 45 minutes from the Bayan Lepas International Airport by bus or taxi.

Known as the “Pearl of the Orient”, the what-to-do-list on the island of Penang is plenty. It attracts visitors with its flavorful cuisine, vibrant culture and rich history. For those who are interested in the history and heritage of this island, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 15 minutes away from the hotel with numerous old architectures, shops and cafés to admire. Alternatively, take in the spectacular views of Georgetown and the iconic Penang Bridge from a distance on top the Penang Hill, via a cable car ride up. Apart from their spread of dishes inspired by their international acclaimed Chinese chefs, this year Dragon-i Group of Restaurants again would introduce their Spring Festival Special Treasure Pot, a symbol of love and affection during this festive reunion. A few of us recently managed to pay a visit to one of their branches here at Queensbay Mall, Penang, headed by seasoned Chinese cuisine chef, Chef Chau Sze Lun (周泗麟) from China. Dragon-i has a variety of delicious spread of cuisine from China especially from the regions of Shanghai, Szechuan, Beijing and Lanzhou to cater to the increasing demands of locals as well as tourists in Penang.

DRAGONICNY201401 photo DRAGONICNY201401_zpsd5af6123.jpg

During this Chinese New Year 2014, the Dragon-i Group of Restaurants is giving all Malaysians the chance to enjoy the Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot, either to dine-in or takeaway to be enjoyed in the comfort of your home. The promotion is from 1 December 2013 until 28 February 2014. There will be two options available this season such as the Signature Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot (RM688++) and the Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot (RM388++). (Please click on the photo below for a clearer picture)

DRAGONICNY201402 photo DRAGONICNY201402_zps35a8bee1.jpg

The takeaway package for both the Signature Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot and the Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot is rather unique. Each selection would have the ingredients frozen in a high quality steel pot, a bottle of the respective high stock, placed in a heat-insulated gift bag. Each bag would be able to sustain the cold ingredients up to 4-5 hours. Thus, you would be able to bring your Abalone Treasure Pot for a long journey at ease, prior to easy reheating before your meal. Please take note that the take away service on 30 January 2014 (Chinese New Year’s Eve) is before 3.00pm. A minimum of 4 days is required for pre-orders. Here’s how the whole takeaway package would look like.

DRAGONICNY201403 photo DRAGONICNY201403_zps74098707.jpg

Dragon-i’s Signature Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot (RM688++ for 8-10 pax) is specially concocted for customers who want something even more supreme and exquisite. It is packed with 18 premium delicacies, namely Braised Premium Chilean Abalone (10 heads), Premium Sea Cucumber, Shark’s Fin, Japanese Dried Scallops, Japanese Dried Oysters, Fish Maw, Goose Web, Roasted Chicken, Braised Pork Belly, Pork Balls, Premium Mushrooms, Brazilian Matsutake Mushrooms, Shaggy Mane Mushrooms, Black Moss, Dried Beancurd Skin, Deep-fried Bean Curd Skin and Bamboo Piths in their Special Broth. It weighs a total of 9 lbs.

DRAGONICNY201404 photo DRAGONICNY201404_zpsc1d04dd9.jpg

What we tried that night was the Prosperity Treasure Pot (RM388++ for 6-8 pax). The Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot was packed with 18 delicacies as well such as Braised Premium Chilean Abalone (12 heads), Sea Cucumber, Japanese Dried Scallops, Japanese Dried Oysters, Premium Mushrooms, “Pantai Remis” Fresh Sea Prawns, Roasted Chicken, Braised Pork Belly, Golden Money Bags, Pork Balls, Dried Bean Curd Skin, Yam, Black Moss, Chinese Cabbage, Broccoli, Deep-fried Bean Curd Skin and Radish, all cooked in a superior Pork Bone Stock. It weighs a total of 9 lbs.

DRAGONICNY201405 photo DRAGONICNY201405_zps50ed3dbf.jpg

Special Discount: For Dragon-i Card and Hong Leong Credit & Debit Card holders, the Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot is now available at an amazing price of RM338++ (original price RM388++).

What amazed me more was the superior Pork Bone Stock, a simple clear soup base with rich bone flavors compared to the Poon Choi I had at Zi Zai Restaurant which had rather concentrated and complicated flavors from the flavored ingredients such as fermented beans and fermented bean curd. Overall, both eateries had their own unique soup concoction for this blessed dish.

DRAGONICNY201406 photo DRAGONICNY201406_zps2588213c.jpg

On top of that, they also do have Chinese New Year Set Meals at Dragon-i and Canton-i. You can check out the different packages here. This year, Dragon-i Group of Restaurants is also launching their “Blissful Combo” deal for takeaways. It would include seven delicious dishes, namely the two main dishes – Fried Glutinous Rice with Waxed Meats @ RM48++ and Lao Sheng (Raw Salmon Fish with Jelly Fish Yu Sheng @ RM48++/RM68++ or Australian Abalone with Raw Salmon Fish Yu Sheng @ RM98++/RM138++). The other five dishes would include Braised Pork Knuckle Shanghainese Style (RM68++), Braised Chicken with Sea Cucumber and Abalone (RM118++), Traditional Char-Roast Goose (RM118++/RM198++), Braised Sea Cucumber with Mushrooms (RM68++) and Sautéed Mushroom with Five Treasure Vegetables (RM48++). (Please click on the photo below for a clearer picture)

DRAGONICNY201407 photo DRAGONICNY201407_zps87100f08.jpg

I would say they have one of the best Lao Sheng (Yee Sang) I have tasted. Not only was the dish filled with colors of prosperity, the fresh raw salmon fish fillets blend in real well with their specially pepped up sauce. On top of that, it had just the right sweetness and moist to my liking.

DRAGONICNY201408 photo DRAGONICNY201408_zps47f4c5a0.jpg

On the other hand, there was also the Fried Glutinous Rice with Waxed Meats. Each mouthful, you can practically taste out the premium-quality waxed meats, good grade mushrooms and fresh crunchy vegetables. The skillful “wok hei” frying sure did added in some bonus flavors to this delicious dish.

DRAGONICNY201409 photo DRAGONICNY201409_zps6ad9d683.jpg

We were also served with Braised Pork Knuckle Shanghainese Style. The dish also came with some added deep fried hardboiled eggs and vegetables. The tender and juicy prok knuckle would surely go well with some steamed rice.

DRAGONICNY201410 photo DRAGONICNY201410_zpsd4bc5e5b.jpg

During this Chinese New Year, with every purchase of Dragon-i blissful products which include our Auspicious Glutinous Rice Cake, Radish Cake with Dried Scallops & Preserved Meats, and Water Chestnut Cake with Osmanthus, we will donate RM10 to World Vision Malaysia. To further celebrate the Chinese New Year 2014, Swez Brasserie @ Eastin Hotel, Penang, would be having its Chinese Odyssey Promotion for the month of February 2014 (2-28 February 2014). The promotion would be under the skillful hands of the Asian Kitchen Chef, Chef Chan Teik Onn. You would be able to savor the many varieties of authentic and fusion Oriental cuisine during this month.

EASTINODYSSEY01 photo EASTINODYSSEY01_zps6f6308da.jpg

Some of the dishes that would be highlighted in the Chinese Odyssey Promotion in February 2014 would included dishes such as the Roasted Duck Roll with Spring Roll Skin (烤鴨春卷). Some fragrantly roasted duck slices would be wrapped together with some julienned vegetables such as cucumber and carrots in the traditional poh piah skin (spring roll skin) and served with their specially pepped up sauce.

EASTINODYSSEY02 photo EASTINODYSSEY02_zpsc6e3a3e8.jpg

You would also get to savor the herbal soup – Braised Black Chicken with Snow Pear Soup (上禮雪梨烏雞湯). Black chicken or sometimes known as silkie, is a superfood that has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. It contains an antioxidant known as carnosine which is beneficial to slow down the oxidation of other chemicals in the human body. Snow pear on the other hand is a great immune booster. It also has some cooling effect to lower the inner heat within the human body.

EASTINODYSSEY03 photo EASTINODYSSEY03_zpsbdba59dd.jpg

Another good dish to try out would be their Wok Fried Prawn with Mayonnaise and Nutmeg (豆蔻蝦). You would sure be impressed with how our local nutmeg would infuse a unique flavor into the dish.

EASTINODYSSEY04 photo EASTINODYSSEY04_zps729b7f5c.jpg

The Chinese New Year festive would not be complete with the symbolic Fatt Choy (sea moss) which carries the meaning of abundance in wealth. Thus, you would get to savor the Braised Trio Mushroom and Fatt Choy with Garden Green (發菜好旺市).

EASTINODYSSEY05 photo EASTINODYSSEY05_zps491877c3.jpg

Of course, you would also get to try out their XO Fried Rice (頂级XO飯), created with their special XO sauce.

EASTINODYSSEY06 photo EASTINODYSSEY06_zpsfae4bf53.jpg

Overall, the choices of dishes served here have the balance of yin and yang for general wellness. The kitchen are also quite creative this time round to make full use of the local ingredients to pep up the flavors of their dishes more. Great work!
