China House which has the full range of dining experiences in this region has been the highlights of many events such as performing arts, art galleries, talk shows and more for quite many years. In fact, it could be the longest restaurant in Malaysia with a buildup area of 400’ x 25’, comprising 2 heritage units facing Lebuh Pantai and a heritage unit facing Lebuh Victoria, linked by a beautiful decorated open air courtyard. With 14 spaces comprising shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries and multi-purpose performing art theatre, we managed to pay a visit to their BTB & Restaurant on one fine evening. The restaurant serves a fusion of Western mixed with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine, something that will thrill the appetite of those adventurous gourmet aficionados. All orders would be inclusive of 6% GST but you would still need to pay for the 10% service charge.

To start off the meal, we tried out some of their signature entrees. Firstly, we were served with their Mezze Vegetarian (RM28+), a platter filled with lots of small dishes and served as an appetizer. The dish consisted of the freshly made Harissa (a chili paste made from various hot peppers), Eggplant Ginger Bud Sambal, Green Relish (cucumber & green chili pickle), Corn & Parmesan Salsa, Red Pepper Chutney, Yoghurt, Pomegranate Dip, Dukkah (mixed herbs, nuts & spices), Lemon Rocket Salad and served with Pita and Focaccia. Well, those were quite a remarkable array of spreads and dips with some twists to infuse some local flavors as well. Everything was perfect except I wished I had some hummus in the platter for my pita bread~ 😛

CHINAHOUSE02 photo CHINAHOUSE02_zpsrqjorrhx.jpg

Next we had the Pumpkin and Apple Soup (RM18+), garnished with Candied Pumpkin Seeds and served with Parmesan Biscotti. The mild sweetness of the pumpkin and the fresh sourness of green apple, combined with little crunchy bites from the added candied pumpkin seeds made this soup very appetizing indeed.

CHINAHOUSE03 photo CHINAHOUSE03_zpsqaiyt1cd.jpg

I’ve tried so many versions of Grilled Halloumi (RM38+) before and their version with added Parmesan Biscotti on Avocado, Sesame Seeds Candied Cashew Nuts, Grapes, Cranberries, Rocket Salad with Pomegranate Dressing was one of the best I’ve tried. The grilling on the semi-hard and unripened brined cheese (forgot to verify if they were made with goat, sheep or cow’s milk) was just perfectly textured for the bite. Combined with their perfectly concocted salad, it was heavenly for a salad lover like me.

CHINAHOUSE04 photo CHINAHOUSE04_zpsz2u92o7s.jpg

The next salad which was the Deep Fried Tiny Prawns (RM38+) on Mango and Avocado Salad, garnished with Pistachio and served with Basil Dressing, was another great salad for me as it had that fruity creaminess with just the right crispiness and crunchiness from the battered fried shrimps and nuts.

CHINAHOUSE05 photo CHINAHOUSE05_zps8uh7g3dg.jpg

Another unique salad was their Salt Egg Yolk Crispy Chicken Strips (RM34+) on Watercress, Peanuts, Corn, Cherry Tomato, Green Mango and Coriander Salad with Spicy Peanut Dip. No doubt it was a great concoction with the flavors that I like.

CHINAHOUSE06 photo CHINAHOUSE06_zpsns0aosii.jpg

As for Main Courses, we started with the 200g of Seared Fillet of Beef (RM76+) served with Parsnip Skordalia and Mushrooms, Roasted Pumpkin and Duo Sauces of Spicy Peanut Sauce and Balsamic Sauce. The main highlight would be the wonderfully seared beef fillet which had the right medium rare texture to my liking. To my surprise, the kitchen used Parsnip Skordalia instead of mashed potatoes. I’ve known from the local market that parsnips are quite rare and they were not commercially grown since the presence of potatoes which are easier to manage. The nuttiness and sourness from the duo sauces combined real well with the beef.

CHINAHOUSE07 photo CHINAHOUSE07_zpsm21pthbz.jpg

The next main course which was the Rack of Lamb (RM76+) was another impressive dish. The nicely pan seared lamb rack was glazed with Chimichurri Pesto and served with Dukkah garnished Roasted Pumpkin, Eggplant Ginger Bud Sambal plus a Cauliflower Gratin on the Side. In my personal opinion, it was another great dish. Combined with the cheesiness from the fragrantly baked cauliflower gratin, I won’t mind having another serving.

CHINAHOUSE08 photo CHINAHOUSE08_zpsigukiwev.jpg

The next dish which was the Asian Platter (RM62+) had my eyes opened widely as it had so many side dishes served with rice. It was like our local Malaysian Nasi Lemak served with various Asian countries’ specialty. It was indeed a different approach to my dining experience. The platter had Laotian Style Chicken & Pumpkin Curry, Malaysian Style Coconut Beef Rendang, Thai Style Sweet Basil Mango Salad, most likely Nyonya Style conceptualized Eggplant Ginger Bud Sambal, Caramelised Peanut Relish, Thai/Laotian Style Chicken Larb in Iceberg Cup, served with hot steaming Coconut Rice and Indonesian Melinjo Crackers (commonly known as emping).

CHINAHOUSE09 photo CHINAHOUSE09_zps1ficxenw.jpg

We also tried out the 2 Main Courses from the Kopi C Casual Dining Menu. One of the more unique dishes was the Hokkien Spaghetti Bolognese (RM34+), a favorite dish amongst the diners. The dish had a bowl of al dente spaghetti tossed with some almost Laos style Minced Chicken with Shitake Mushrooms gravy and served with Cucumber Ribbons, Eggplant Ginger Bud Sambal, Caramelized Peanuts and an extra serving of the Minced Chicken with Shitake Mushrooms “Curry”. I quite like the fusion in this dish.

CHINAHOUSE10 photo CHINAHOUSE10_zpsjg4k5j4q.jpg

The second main we had was the Chicken & Mushroom Pie (RM38+) served with Baked Sweet Potato, Mashed Potato, Broccoli and Tomato Relish. I simply love the buttery crust of the pie with quite a generous amount of chicken and mushroom chunks within. How I wished they do have beef pies too.

CHINAHOUSE11 photo CHINAHOUSE11_zpsqkifelwb.jpg

For cakes lovers, Beach Street Bakery @ China House is the place for you to with all their mouth watering homemade cakes. In fact, you have a long table filled with heavenly goodies to soothe your sugar craving~ 😛

CHINAHOUSE12 photo CHINAHOUSE12_zpsfs7bn1fb.jpg

We did try out some of their recommended cakes and all of them were up to my expectation, especially the Tiramisu Cake. We tried out their Tiramisu (RM15.90+), Passion fruit Coconut Butter (RM10.60+), Chocoholic Chocolate (RM12.70+), Banana Mocha Frosting (RM12.70+), Carrot Walnut (RM10.60+) and Salted Caramel Cheesecake (RM15.90+).

CHINAHOUSE13 photo CHINAHOUSE13_zpshajgzfto.jpg

As for beverages, they do have an extensive array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. We have decided to go for the non-alcoholic beverages such as Single Shot Café Latte (RM10.60+), Gula Melaka Shake with Homemade Ice Cream (RM18.30+), Peanut Butter & Jelly Milkshake with Homemade Ice Cream (RM18.30+), Freshly Made Crushed Mint & Lime Soda (RM10.60+), Ice Coffee Milo Dinosour with Cold Milk Foam (RM11.50+) and Strawberry Banana Granola Smoothie with Natural Yoghurt (RM16.30+).

CHINAHOUSE14 photo CHINAHOUSE14_zps3lj12ot0.jpg

Overall, I quite like the dishes served here at BTB & Restaurant especially all the uniquely concocted salads. Though some the pricing might be a bit steep for some diners, you can be assured that you would be getting the freshest ingredients from the kitchen. As for dessert lovers, it’s a must for you to drop over for some heavenly baked cakes over tea or coffee.

If you are coming from Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) towards Bayan Lepas/Penang Internatioanl Airport (PIA) in George Town area, slow down when you have reached the Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal. Upon the ending of the iron metal divider, keep right and turn right into the second junction which is Gat Lebuh Armernian. Drive onwards the cross junction (Gat Lebuh Armenian/Lebuh Victoria) until you have reach Lebuh Pantai (Beach Street). Turn right and you would see China House about 50m away on your right. Parking could be quite scare during peak hours of the day. To prevent yourself from getting lost or getting summon for illegal parking, I would advise you to find a parking at the open car park nearby. Instead of turning into the second right junction of Gat Lebuh Armenian, drive further to the third right junction which is Gat Lebuh Acheh. You can see an open car park at the corner of Pengkalan Weld/Gat Lebuh Acheh. Park your car and use the Lebuh Victoria exit, turn right and walk for another 160m and you can see the China House @ Lebuh Victoria Entrance on your left. You won’t miss it as the signage is quite prominent.

EASTINSEAFOOD photo EASTINSEAFOOD_zpsby0unys4.jpg

Overall, I do find the buffet spreads under the supervision of the new Executive Sous Chef, Chef Johnno Fong, to be quite extraordinary compared to the buffets I had at the same venue for the past few years. The dishes served indeed did set the whole atmosphere to be in celebrative moods. However, I do find the dessert section lacked of some Chinese influence as most were basically Western and Nyonya/Malay cakes and bakes. They should have come out with something like steamed glutinous rice cakes with grated coconut, lo han guo infused snow fungus with dried longan soup, red beans filled sesame balls, glutinous rice ball in ginger syrup, fish shaped crystal jelly, pineapple tarts, peanuts cookies, fortune cookies and more.

The Swez Brasserie is located at the ring wing of Eastin Hotel, Penang (next to Queensbay Mall). If you are coming from Georgetown towards Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone via Bayan Lepas Expressway, do watch out for the Pulau Jerejak signboard (leading to Pulau Jerejak jetty). Ignore the turning and drive on to the next left junction. Turn left into Jalan Aziz Ibrahim and drive on until you a roundabout. Turn 3 o’clock and drive on until you see a big Eastin Hotel signboard at the first right junction. Turn right and drive on. Park your car at the basement car park. Take a lift to the first floor lobby and you would see the restaurant there.

The highlight of the season would definitely be at the Carving Station especially on the Authentic Roasted Turkey with Classic Ingredients and Condiments. Do watch out for the Yorkshire Puddings which would be great with any meat items. One thing great about the turkey was that it was prepared perfectly with the right roasting, tenderness and juiciness.

EASTINXMAS201502 photo EASTINXMAS201502_zpsuyxblppm.jpg

There would also be some international Cold Delicacies such as Chicago Turkey Mixed Salad, Australia Potato Salad and Walnut Apple Salad to start off your meal. At the same time, do check out their Fresh Mushroom Cream Soup served with Fresh Baked Bread and Rolls.

For Hot Delicacies, you would be treated with Chicken Roulade with Pomegranate Sauce, Spanish Butter Rice with Nut, Poached Seabass with Saffron Sauce and more. Well, I quite like the Chicken Roulade with Pomegranate Sauce as it was one dish that you could hardly get from other eateries. Pomegranates are loaded with important nutrients that may lower the risk of all sorts of diseases.

EASTINXMAS201504 photo EASTINXMAS201504_zpswu9roccg.jpg

As for Desserts, they would be many festive bakes and pastries to tempt your sweet tooth such as Ginger Bread House, Christmas Fruits Cake with Icing, House Christmas Mousse, Christmas Log, Ginger Bread Fantasy, Cherry Truffle and more.

If you are planning to find a 3 legged furry cat or any other cats which you could cuddle in this café, you have visited the wrong café. The newly opened 3 Leg Cat Café (三腳貓) today is actually a hangout place for those whom would like relax over some nicely brewed coffee and Western-Asian fusion meals. For those TV game enthusiasts, there’s also a big screen TV with game consoles to entertain you urge to have a game or two. Anyway, the true story behind the fictional shop name, created by the husband-wife team (Ted Soo & Jereen Tan), was rather interesting based on Ted’s childhood encounter with a friend. Ted jokingly told his friend that he owned a 3-legged cat and his friend believed in his story for many years until they have grown into adulthood. I wondered why it did not spark his friend’s curiosity during that time to actually see the proof~ LOL!

3LEGCATCAFE01 photo 3LEGCATCAFE01_zpscji06tmp.jpg

There’s also a huge display of anime figurines on the racks, creatively designed by Ted himself. Of course, there are some cat figurines on display too since both the couples are also cat lovers.

3LEGCATCAFE02 photo 3LEGCATCAFE02_zpsbt377reo.jpg

3LEGCATCAFE03 photo 3LEGCATCAFE03_zpsmgbplu2k.jpg

3LEGCATCAFE04 photo 3LEGCATCAFE04_zpsqzolxnqi.jpg

As for some basic meals, we ordered their Aglio Olio (RM12). Except for the al dente of the spaghetti which was more towards the softness of Asian liking, the dish was flavorfully prepared with some added bacons which pepped up the overall flavors. You won’t go wrong ordering this dish but do watch out for the spicy hot dried chilies. Maybe, it would be great if you inform the counter on your spicy level.

3LEGCATCAFE05 photo 3LEGCATCAFE05_zps37uiiliv.jpg

The next dish was the Special Grilled Tennessee Chicken (RM16), served on mashed potatoes and a bunch of fresh greens, alongside with more of the Tennessee style gravy. It was quite a thick slab of fresh chicken breast meat with minimal seasoning grilled to perfection. However, I would prefer the meat to be slightly fork-poke to enable more flavors to marinate through. Though the gravy provided was quite nice, it could be a bit too sweet for those who prefer to cut down on their sugar intake. After all, the recipe would consist of sugar/brown sugar to sweeten up the gravy. Personally, I would love to see more options for gravy such as rosemary brown sauce or even cheesy white sauce.

3LEGCATCAFE06 photo 3LEGCATCAFE06_zpsps2dwicd.jpg

Since we were quite full with the mains, we managed to try out only one of their many homemade cakes and bakes. We had their Hummingbird Cake (RM10). Wow! I’m impressed! Not only was the texture of the cake just right for my liking, the taste for the cream cheese frosting was just right too. Overall, it was the type of cake with the right amount of sweetness to my liking.

3LEGCATCAFE07 photo 3LEGCATCAFE07_zpsyl7hodi0.jpg

For those coffee lovers with a liking for dark roasted Indonesian coffee beans, this is the place for you to indulge in your caffeine booster. You should try out their Shakerato Latte (Original – RM12). Ted sure knows how to get the balance right for this iced beverage. The amount of coffee, milk, ice cubes plus a light touch of syrup, shaken to perfection was just the beverage I was looking for on a humid Sunday.

3LEGCATCAFE08 photo 3LEGCATCAFE08_zpshzahi8fw.jpg

I’m normally quite a fussy person when having my cup of coffee. It has to be at the right temperature with a less acidic coffee brew and the barista did not fail me at all. It was a perfect cup of Salted Caramel Latte (RM10) with the type of bitterness from the dark roast I was expecting… mildly sweetened with a mild salty after taste.

3LEGCATCAFE09 photo 3LEGCATCAFE09_zps98nrcrv6.jpg

Overall, the café is still new and would need to have more improvements on their menu to provide more options.

It’s not hard to locate 3 Leg Cat Café as you can visibly see the shop along the main road. If you are coming from Relau along Jalan Paya Terubong, just watch out for the traffic lights just right before The Golden Triangle building. Turn right into Lintang Sungai Ara 5 and you can see the shop just 2 shop lots away from the famous Wah Chai Roasted Meat shop. Parking in front of the shop might be a hassle during peak hours. I would advise you to go straight into the car park in the building and walk to the shop. However, do take note that it could be quite a distance of walk.

Someone once told me, “It’s never too late to start creating the bodies we want instead of depending on the one we’ve been abusing with the wrong diet.” He was not wrong as I found myself healthier with the right moderation of diets. Life has been so productive ever since I found myself constantly patronizing the many branches of Idealite (品味舒食) – Malaysia’s First Wholesome Dining Place with its meatless, gluten-free, MSG-free, lactose-free diets. This year, for the Nine Emperor Gods’ Festival, all the Idealite participating branches (Gottlieb Road, Gurney Plaza, Queensbay Mall and Egate) would be serving a special menu for its customers in which would not contain any meat, egg, garlic, onion and dairy products from 12 October 2015 until 21 October 2015.

We tried out the dishes at Idealite @ Egate, the latest branch to open at the end of September 2015. The layout for this branch is more sophisticated and warm with the state-of-the-art wall decorations. Any passerby might think that it’s a classy restaurant but they are really into a big surprise as the cuisine within would surely change their perspectives on dining healthily without the usages of any meat, gluten, MSG, peanuts and milk.

The menu for this year is quite extensive with Idealite covering your dining needs from rice, noodles, pizza, snacks to dessert. You can start off with their Mexican Baked Brown Rice Casserole (墨西哥香烤焗饭 – RM 16.70++). The dish basically had some well seasoned brown rice, topped with varieties of mushrooms, glazed with some creamy oat milk based sauce with a sprinkle of fresh greens as garnishing. You won’t expect to find cheese on this dish as vegetarians would not consume dairy products.

IDEALITEVEGE201502 photo IDEALITEVEGE201502_zpsabxczqik.jpg

Another option for rice would be their Signature Masala Curry Rice (马萨拉风味咖喱拌饭 – RM15.70++). I must say this was one of the flavorful and aromatic vegetarian curry dishes I’ve tasted for awhile. Even without the usages of garlic and onions in the recipe, the kitchen was able to bring out the flavors superbly. It was truly a balanced curry dish with the right combination of herbs and spices. Of course, the sweetness from the added vegetables (especially from the potato chunks) and mushrooms (especially the meaty Hericium erinaceus) gave that required bites in this splendid dish. The Masala Curry was served with a bowl of brown rice with some blanched vegetables and papadam.

IDEALITEVEGE201503 photo IDEALITEVEGE201503_zpsfaobvxx3.jpg

You could also try out their Signature Masala Dry Curry Ramen (马萨拉风味干咖喱拉面 – RM16.70++), in which ramen would replace the steamed brown rice. Basically, the curry base would be the same. However, I do prefer this version better as the rich flavors from the curry tasted better with the usage of ramen. Each strand of the ramen coated with the curry had me savoring the whole bowl in no time. It was heavenly to all the taste buds in my mouth.

IDEALITEVEGE201504 photo IDEALITEVEGE201504_zpsihzylqaf.jpg

Their Cantonese Style Emperor Yee Mee (广式帝王炸生面 – RM16.70++) may not look that impressive to the eyes at the first glance. However, as for flavors, it was one of my most loved dishes amongst all. The secret lies in the gravy as it was indeed a rich stock with sweet flavors emitted from the abundance of vegetables used for the broth, more significantly the unique sweetness from the usages of corns. Even the texture and al dente of the noodles complemented real well. Thumbs up chef!

IDEALITEVEGE201505 photo IDEALITEVEGE201505_zpslokcfryn.jpg

For those who love the sweetness and sourness of tomatoes, you may love their Prosperity Tomato Jumble Pizza (香料番茄批萨 – RM18.70++) well. With the generous serving of fresh tomatoes and mushrooms on top of other chopped vegetables, this crunchy thin base of pizza would surely wow over your appetite.

IDEALITEVEGE201506 photo IDEALITEVEGE201506_zps8pgnrsx7.jpg

Alternatively, they have the Italiannies Spinach Pizza (意式青酱批萨 – RM19.70++) as well. Now I know why Popeye loved spinach so much as the overall flavors from this pizza superseded my expectation, especially with the added roasted cashew nuts which boosted up more nutty and earthly flavors for the pizza. This is definitely a must-have dish during your visit to any of the Idealite branches.

IDEALITEVEGE201507 photo IDEALITEVEGE201507_zpsfpef7zsm.jpg

To further impress my perspective on healthy diets, their Triple-Decker Pumpkin Taro Cake (金童芋女 – RM6.70++) was another hit on my healthy food chart. The base consisted of nice chunks of powdery taro, topped with pureed pumpkin and mung bean flour (hoon kueh), then garnished with some flavorful yet healthy pumpkin floss. This was for sure another great creation by Idealite and I could get enough of it.

IDEALITEVEGE201508 photo IDEALITEVEGE201508_zps07cldwka.jpg

The restaurant also do serve some nice Authentic Golden Five Spice Rolls (黄金五香卷 – RM10.70++/3 pieces). The differences between the ones served here compared to the rest sold on the streets would be the usages of great ingredients. Idealite’s version has a generous amount of mushrooms added in on top of the beautifully spiced up taro.

IDEALITEVEGE201509 photo IDEALITEVEGE201509_zps4jvj6tdr.jpg

If you can’t get enough from the promoted dishes mentioned above, you can still choose from their daily available Ala Carte Menu. Some of the recommended ones are stated below.

For something light and yet delicious, you could always try out their hot selling Idealite Satay (舒食沙爹串 – RM11.70++). Of course, Satay would always remain as Malaysians’ as well as tourists’ favorite street food. Instead of being served with peanut sauce, you would be served with cashew nuts sauce which would be creamier and nuttier. The lovely skews of satays would be made from the meaty Hericium erinaceus mushrooms (猴頭菇).

IDEALITEVEGE201510 photo IDEALITEVEGE201510_zpsbj9dk5r5.jpg

You also be interested to try out their Hokkaido Vege Sushi (北海道蔬菜寿司 – RM9.70++), a rice roll based sushi with a combinations of healthy vegetables and homemade enzyme to strengthen your immune system.

IDEALITEVEGE201511 photo IDEALITEVEGE201511_zpsrfryenvk.jpg

To get the kids to eat healthily, you might want to them their Pumpkin Piglet Buns (猪仔包 – RM6.70++). On top of being steamed with healthy flour, the oozy pumpkin paste within can be real delicious.

IDEALITEVEGE201512 photo IDEALITEVEGE201512_zps9roj4gmh.jpg

To have some local desserts to end your meal, you can always order their Homemade Rojak (自制罗加 – RM10.70++) with a mixture of fruits, vegetables and tofu puff to dip into their special rojak sauce. This item could be real addictive.

IDEALITEVEGE201513 photo IDEALITEVEGE201513_zpsaxtpkmjy.jpg

Overall, the dishes served this year during the coming Nine Emperor God’s Festival are impressive for the palate of all diners, whether you are a vegetarian, a vegan or a meat eater. Idealite has now become the wholesome dining place loved by many patrons, young and old.

If you are in for an additional dessert, you could always join in their Snap & Post Promotion as shown. Terms & Conditions apply.

EQVIET201501 photo EQVIET201501_zpssb9wowal.jpg

Let’s jump into the simple and yet enchantingly sophisticated cuisine, starting from the Salads, Starters and Soup Sections. You would find spreads such as the Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls with Beef Slices, Duck with Cabbages & Banana Blossom Salad, Watercress with Beef Salad, Steamed Rice Cake with Dried Shrimps, Green Papaya Salad with Prawns, Pea Sprouts with Tuna Salad and Salted Vegetables with Chicken Soup. Wow! It was an impressive spread of dishes that caught my attention. Practically everything here suited my palate real well. However, I should think that the kitchen had forgotten to sprinkle the rice cakes with dried shrimps~ LOL~ 😛

EQVIET201502 photo EQVIET201502_zpslvplzgcl.jpg

As for the Hot Buffet Section, you would get to try out their Vietnamese Style Stewed Beef, Vietnamese Stewed Chicken in Ginger, Stir Fried Angle Beans in Hot Garlic Sauce, Wok Fried Squid in Sweet & Sour Sauce, Deep Fried Eel in Tamarind Sauce, Fish Paste Stuffed Fried Tofu in Tomato Sauce, Stewed Prawns in Caramelized Fish Sauce, Grilled Duck Legs with Red Fermented Bean Curd, Stewed Red Snapper with Black Beans, served with White Rice and Chicken & Egg Fried Rice. I immediately fell in love with the Vietnamese Style Stewed Beef as each bite of the juicy and tender meat was pepped up with simple and yet flavorful texture. The Fish Paste Stuffed Fried Tofu in Tomato Sauce may look simple but each of the silky soft deep fried tofu with smooth fish paste was remarkably addictive. On the other hand, the Stewed Red Snapper with Black Beans complemented real well with the Chicken & Egg Fried Rice. Thumbs up!

EQVIET201504 photo EQVIET201504_zpspaz8j6ur.jpg

At the Live Cooking Sections, you would get to savor their Chicken & Dried Bamboo Glass Noodles and Skillet Fried Beef with Rice Noodles. Somehow the soup base for the noodles had some hidden added herbs infused in it, somewhat like the flavor of ginseng but milder. The whole concoction was delicious. I was totally impressed by how the Vietnamese team marinated the beef slices unlike those I have tried elsewhere which were rather bland. With the combination of rice noodles, fresh greens and some pickled carrots, it was indeed a comfort dish. The only thing was that I had wished to have some added fried chili flakes in oil to spice up the dish a bit more. Now I’m yearning for more of the Bún Bò Xào~ 😛

EQVIET201505 photo EQVIET201505_zpsdwovvzli.jpg

We also had our mouth sweetened up at their Dessert Section. You get to savor their Baked Cassava (Tapioca) Cake, Jelly & Pomegranate Seeds in Sweet Syrup, Green Beans & Seaweed in Syrup, Mung Beans in Coconut Milk and Stewed Lotus Seeds with White Fungus.

EQVIET201506 photo EQVIET201506_zpsvyjv1ocl.jpg

On top of all the robustly flavored dishes, there were also some sections for those international spreads such as the DIY Salad Section, the Fruit Cuts & Fruit Cocktail Section and the International/Local Dessert Section.

EQVIET201509 photo EQVIET201509_zpsbeeg6gt7.jpg

Overall, I would say this was one of the best buffets I have had on Vietnemase cuisine for a super long time. At least you could taste the authentic flavors of Vietnam with their imported fresh greens and herbs. Thanks to Chef Tran Kim Hoang Trong and his team for taking their efforts in looking into such details. Vietnamese cuisine would contain lots of fresh greens, beef and duck, thus some of you might think that the cuisine would not be suitable for you. Well, there are also other spreads of seafood and chicken which would be palatable to most diners. A set of menus will be on rotation basis to enable diners to experience the best of what Vietnam has to offer.

If you are coming from Bayan Baru area towards Jalan Tun Dr Awang, make a right turn into Persiaran Bukit Jambul at the second traffic lights. Drive all the way up the sloppy road until you see INTI International College on your left. Drive about another 150m onwards and turn right into Jalan Bukit Jambul at the first junction you see. You will see the hotel on your left. The easiest way to get there would be by parking your car on the right side of the building as your enter the hotel’s car park. Take the nearest stairway up a level and you will see the restaurant on your left. Nada Lama is just opposite the Kampachi Japanese Restaurant by the pool side.

Swez Brasserie @ Eastin Hotel, Penang will be having “Wonderful Indonesia” Buffet Lunch promotion on Weekdays for the month of August 2015 (1-31 August 2015). Diners will be treated with authentic Indonesian cuisine for all parts of the country. The Buffet Lunch would be priced at RM66nett (adult) and RM33nett (child). Senior Citizen would be entitles to a 50% discount.

EASTININDO201501 photo EASTININDO201501_zps7lxzsu3d.jpg

To start off the meal, you might be interested in the infamous Indonesian appetizer known as the Gado Gado (Mixed Salad with Peanut Sauce). It’s a DIY salad which would consist of shredded jicama, cucumber, carrot, blanched long beans, boiled potatoes, deep fried bean curd and hard-boiled eggs with superbly tasty peanut dressing and Emping Melinjo crackers as garnish. That’s a bonus indeed as most eatery would just provide some sort of crackers instead.

EASTININDO201502 photo EASTININDO201502_zpsz6e4uk7o.jpg

As for soup, you can try out their Sup Buntut (Indonesian Style Oxtail Soup). Well, in Malaysia, we called it Sup Ekor (oxtail) rather than buntut as it meant buttock in Bahasa Malaysia~ LOL~ Anyway, this soup can be considered one of the more expensive dishes in Indonesian cuisine as it would require long hours of simmering as well as the pricey beef option. Compared to the Malaysian version of Sup Ekor, Sup Buntut would have lesser spices and herbs flavors but with a stronger sourness with the generously added amount of fresh tomatoes.

EASTININDO201510 photo EASTININDO201503_zpsbl0f3xt9.jpg

Do check out their Nasi Goreng Ikan (Indonesian Style Fried Rice with Fish Flakes). I quite like the fragrantly spiced up fried rice with some freshly prepared fish flakes. Other than plain steamed rice, this dish would add on more flavors with the other main dishes. With the add-on of Sambal Ikan Bilis with some hard-boiled eggs. I could have this dish just by itself.

EASTININDO201503 photo EASTININDO201504_zpsmefe45nt.jpg

Indonesia is famous for its Pecel Lele (Fried Catfish). Of course, the smooth and fine texture of the fish was an added bonus to go with the fried rice.

EASTININDO201504 photo EASTININDO201505_zpspygh9gpe.jpg

The thick gravy Beef Rendang Jawa went well with the fried rice as well as the thick gravy based curry was pepped with fragrantly concocted spices.

EASTININDO201505 photo EASTININDO201506_zpsurjzorii.jpg

For some vegetables instead of the other meaty stuff, you can always try out their Lontong Sayur (Mixed Vegetables in Coconut Broth), a turmeric and coconut base dish filled with lots of vegetables, bean curds and tempeh. However, I did not see any of the healthy tempeh in the dish. Maybe it could be due to its availability as it’s not something easily obtained from the Malaysian market. This is a common Indonesian dish served with lontong (steamed banana leaves wrapped rice cake).

EASTININDO201506 photo EASTININDO201507_zps6v72qzb5.jpg

My favorite Perkadel or commonly known as Bergedil here in Malaysia were very flavorful. However, the potatoes were too mashed up. It would be great if the kitchen could make them more coarsely for that extra bite. Some added green and red chilies within would have pepped up the flavor even more.

EASTININDO201507 photo EASTININDO201508_zps1rdi45ds.jpg

As for side dishes, who could resist Sate Ayam (Grilled Chicken Chunks on Skewers)? These came served with some nasi himpit, cucumber and onions plus the beautifully pepped up peanut sauce. What made me curious was that why they serve Malaysian Nasi Himpit instead of Lontong which is of the same compressed rice cake but with the fragrant from the wrapped banana leaves?

EASTININDO201508 photo EASTININDO201509_zpszfsbiij1.jpg

For a lighter meal, you could also try out their Bakso Ayam (Chicken Meatballs Noodles). I personally prefer the beef balls version as it would be tastier than the ones in chicken stock.

EASTININDO201509 photo EASTININDO201510_zpsmmzvo0pv.jpg

As for dessert, there would be some items available such as the Pisang Goreng dengan Coklat dan Keju (Banana Fritter with Chocolate Syrup & Grated Cheese), Kek Lapis (Indonesian Layer Cake), Homemade Apom Cawan, Chilled Es Teler and more. Es Teler is somewhat like the Thai’s Tub Tim Krob except it has added condensed milk and palm sugar. Normally, it would have sliced jackfruits, young coconut and avocado but you could also top up with any other fruits you like such as mangoes, strawberries, toddy palm seeds or even jelly noodles.

EASTININDO201514 photo EASTININDO201514_zpstrhyyxxt.jpg

Overall, if you are into Malaysian cuisine, there won’t be lots of differences in Indonesian cuisine as most of the dishes would be quite similar but with some extra tweaks. I would prefer if the kitchen would create something out of the norm, something that you could hardly get from the Malaysian culinary scene. Javanese dishes could be quite similar to ours but Balinese dishes could appear to be more outstanding. The kitchen should consider dishes such as Sate Lilit, Sate Udang, Sate Belut, etc instead of the commonly available Malaysian satay choices. As for main dishes, there are more options such as their famous Bebek Goreng (Crispy Fried Duck), Be Siap Betutu (Slow Roasted Chicken), Pesan Be Pasih (Grilled Fish in Banana Leaves), Ayam/Iga Penyet (Fried & Smashed Chicken/Beef Ribs) and more. Even the sambal has to be distinctive compared to the Malaysian version with options such as the Sambal Terasi and Sambal Matah.

BEVERAGE STALL (Air Bandung/ Soya Milk with Cincau/ Mata Kucing/ Young Coconut, Teh Tarik, Kopi Tarik, Coffee & Tea)

What are the “MUST TRY DISHES” at Eastin Hotel Penang during this coming Ramadan?

1. There are many different types of sambal such as the sambal cincaluk, sambal mempelam and sambal kelapa to go with your dishes. Various kinds of sambal are must in most Malaysian cuisine and only during Ramadan do they produce certain varieties.

EASTINRAMADAN201502 photo EASTINRAMADAN201502_zpsl1ddpp0q.jpg

2. You should try out the Malaysian version of Oxtail Soup with added mushrooms known as Sup Ekor Cendawan. It’s an impactful yet flavorful soup with the uses of local herbs and spices plus beef bones stock.

EASTINRAMADAN201503 photo EASTINRAMADAN201503_zpsey5v6oku.jpg

3. Another dish to take note will be the Gulai Asam Rom (Asam Rong/Aserong/Asrong) Sayuran/Siput Sedut, an appetite booster. This famous Pahang dish is quite rare in modern days as the main ingredient of buah perah (kelampai/rampeh/Elateriospermum tapos) is rather hard to obtain due to our fast development, except maybe from the jungle of Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Indonesia or Thailand. As it tastes just like the rubber tree seeds, some might use the rubber tree seeds instead. The curry has unique flavors and can be quite addictive.

EASTINRAMADAN201504 photo EASTINRAMADAN201504_zpsdg8yzzmo.jpg

4. You might have heard about Oxtail Soup but hardly would you get Oxtail Rendang aka Rendang Ekor from your usual Malay restaurants. This is the secret recipe of the chef’s mother. It’s best not to miss out the chance to savor this unique dish.

EASTINRAMADAN201505 photo EASTINRAMADAN201505_zpspfmnq4au.jpg

5. Do check out the Nasi Lemak Kukus Action Counter for Malaysian’s favorite dish. It may look simple but once you have a mouthful of the fragrant coconut milk infused rice accompanied with the flavorful sambal tumis, hardboiled egg, ikan bilis, fried peanuts and ayam goreng berempah, you would want to seek for more. It’s truly an addictive dish for all.

EASTINRAMADAN201506 photo EASTINRAMADAN201506_zpsu2mjapbo.jpg

6. You would hardly see a Whole Roasted Lamb unless it’s for grand occasions. The tender yet juicy meat had been marinated with special herbs and spices for 3 days prior to being roasted until perfection. This will be served with Middle East style of Bukhari Rice, using basmati rice cooked with tomato paste and various spices. One word~ Lazeez!

EASTINRAMADAN201507 photo EASTINRAMADAN201507_zps1pmdrnqv.jpg

7. One of my favorite dishes to hunt at Pasar Ramadan will always be the Turkish style Chicken Shawarma and they have it here as one of the dishes for buffet. Perfect! Instead of my usual bread wrap, they are using pita bread pockets with their special dressing. Who’s to complain since I can have as many as I ever wanted? 😛

EASTINRAMADAN201508 photo EASTINRAMADAN201508_zpsxjezskct.jpg

8. For more energy and stamina during the puasa month, you should try out their signature Sup Gearbox. It’s one great dish that I would always look forward to each year at Eastin Hotel Penang. The spices and herbs used in slowly simmering the bull’s thigh bones combined with some potatoes and carrots were indeed “powerful”. A bowl of this heavenly dish would surely keep the body energetic and rejuvenated for any activities during the fasting month.

EASTINRAMADAN201509 photo EASTINRAMADAN201509_zpsyvisoh7h.jpg

9. One of the popular Ramadan specialties would be an energy packed porridge known as Bubur Lambuk. The porridge is normally prepared by volunteers in mosques throughout the country and served to the public for free. The ingredients used from state to state might be different, ranging from poultry, meat and seafood. The most popular one would be the spice and energy packed porridge with the use of rich beef bone stock for that extra power.
